Session Drums controlled

Post by Neil Gard » Mon Jan 04, 2010 12:51 am

Hi all. I would like some advice.

Im after a midi controller.

I would like a drum pad device to send midi data as to control session drums.

Obviously it needs to send 1-127 velocities.

I dont want a kit sized setup as im limited with space, beside i am not a drummer so something that is 20 inch or so in diameter with pads one can play with drum sticks would be fine.

Shawn Pelton is playing something similar to what i had in mind in the session drums video here. WATCH--->> http://www.ableton.com/session-drums

If anyone can suggest a device i would be most greatful.

He is playing a DrumKat by Alternate Mode. I cannot recommend these too highly. I have the first model (I think), the DK10. I play this live and wouldn't dream of giving it up. Some other, similar-sized multipad devices would include the Roland SPD series, and the Roland Octopad. But I've played these and nothing comes close to the accuracy of the DK10 as far as accurate triggering goes. They don't use piezo pickups but rather force-sensing resistors so you get the same response whether you hit a given zone dead-center, or at its edge.

You can pick up a DK10 used for ~$200 US (not sure where you are located).

Here's a used one

I think that this is indeed your best option and you will have a lot of fun playing it, and very little fuss once you set it up for your needs. You can PM me if you have any further questions about it, I use it all the time.
