** Warning - this is a long post seeking advice or recommendations **
Okay...so here is the background to the topic at hand.....
I am self-employed as a Mortgage Associate / Teacher / Musician and therefore have a home office/studio. Most insurance plans that cover homeowners or renters will protect your stuff while on that premise and no further. However, as a musician, I of course sometimes need to go to gigs etc.
Until recently, I was told by my insurance agent that my gear was protected under my renter's plan should anything happen to it while at a gig (someone breaks into my car, etc.) Well, I recently relocated to North Carolina and the same insurance company I was using, Liberty Mutual, says that in this state they will not touch me....in fact, they won't touch anything that has to go on the road and said that most insurance companies who claim they do, if it came down to taking the claim would make it extremely difficult to have anything reimbursed. Essentially, they lie to you to get your sale (big surprise I know, but still...a bit disheartening as an artist).
I have talked to several other companies now too and they all say the same thing. They would cover my gear while at home, and that is it
!!!!....is this really the case? How do professional DJ's and other musicians have their stuff protected while touring?
Does anyone currently hold a policy here in the States that covers them while gigging/touring? Not just while they are recording at home. If so, can you point me in the right direction because I am hitting a wall.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Peace.
