yeah get yourself to a spin class. they are pretty hardcore and even if you are a keen cyclist it will probably throw you off for a few sessions but its great. i used to go 3 times a week but i got a new job on variable shifts so its touch an go at the moment

Bikes are amazing. Not only it helps us do more exercise in travelling than using cars or something, it also helps the environment avoid polution. I hope people would start using this because it trully helps a lot to us. Right?

I use a mag trainer in the apartment, doesn't make too much noise but I agree its not the greatest workout in the world. I used to rock rollers and they're fun, especially the first few times you lose your balance and bite it. But again not a big workout....
I'm torn about spin classes. They make you sweat gallons which feels good but the bike snob in me has a hard time with the stand up sit down stand up sit down fight fight fight bullshit. An hour of blasting tarnce doesn't help the matter.

Yeah, spin classes do have that downside, but the class I attended last winter started changing over to do doing everything according to pulse rate - then you'd either do that standing up/sitting down rubbish or not depending where your heart rate was. Was another step in the right direction for getting fitter, faster...nylarch wrote:I use a mag trainer in the apartment, doesn't make too much noise but I agree its not the greatest workout in the world. One thing I haven't checked out yet is they're doing group indoor rides at a cycling center nearby...its $20 a pop or something but you bring your own bike and do a guided group ride on mag trainers....could be interesting and I hear its a hard workout.

I don't know what to think about this, TBH8O wrote:Meanwhile... Doctor sentenced to 5 years in prison for assaulting bicyclists in Brentwood
I mean... road rage is inexcusable in any situation, and I wasn't there to see what happened but I'm almost sure the blame doesn't fall entirely on him.
We all know there's plenty of inconsiderate, road-hogging, reckless riding, and on top of that, self-righteous cyclists out there. Even I get pissed at the jackassery some other cyclists pull and sometimes wish they'd crash face-first into a cabbie's back windshield.
Once again, I don't condone the guy's behavior. I'm just sayin. Who knows what kind of shit these guys were pulling before it all went down?
Re: OT: Cycling ... as in... riding bikes... as in... bicycles
True that - the article does suggest that the cyclists were no angels either. Reminds me of a couple of summers ago where I videoed one of my rides by taping my camera to my handlebars - just during that ride there were many examples of pedestrians and car drivers who did something stupid like walk blindly across the cycle lane and were about to get aggressive at me, only to catch a glimpse of the open-lensed camera before instantly modifying their reaction to innocently passive...aqua_tek wrote:I don't know what to think about this, TBH8O wrote:Meanwhile... Re: OT: Cycling ... as in... riding bikes... as in... bicycles
Agreed, it's a shame when cyclists are trying so hard to be seen and have the same road rights, and then you have groups of guys riding 4 wide or running lights. I see that a lot out here, drives me nuts too.aqua_tek wrote:We all know there's plenty of inconsiderate, road-hogging, reckless riding, and on top of that, self-righteous cyclists out there. Hi everyone,
a sort-of related question here: Does anyone know a good bike shop/ rental around Anaheim CA, Laguna Beach or anywhere nearby?
I'll be heading over tomorrow and would like to rent a road bike for a week.
Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks.

I love cycling a lot just like you do.
I have my weekends reserved for my 'fun' time and I always look ahead to cycling out to the woods with my friends. No cars or machines for me at that time !

So I ended up getting a Minoura Action Mag roller that I found on ebay for a decent price including the resistance adjustment gauge.

I got back to Brooklyn yesterday, and finally put it to the test today.
I'm all bruised up from banging against the walls trying to keep myself straight. Eventually I did manage to ride it well for a few minutes at a time, before slipping off to one side and getting my ass kicked again.
The resistance gauge is a nice addition. I'm still using it with the lowest level of resistance, while I get the hang of it, but even at that level, it feels like a good workout.
and it's actually not loud. Not much louder than any treadmill or other in-home workout machine, at least... and I find that pretty manageable.

Nate, how much did that set you back?
I busted out my first ride of 2010 last night - East Village to Greenpoint, beers, and then back - loving the decent weather in NYC right now.

set me back 200 clams brand new.
I actually took it for a short ride today to finally try out the FG side, new stem, and new bars on the street. Fun.

HOLD UP!! is there any graceful way of falling off that thing? you're going 15-20mph on a treadmill and a tire hits the ground, there's gonna be some skull shaped indentation on your walls!
