Big fat punchy kicks.
Re: Big fat punchy kicks.
i keep listenin to all these jay dilla tracks and he has the punchiest kick ive ever heard on any song. its do deep and bassy its crazy. everytime i try to bass up my kicks in pro tools they always just start cracklin and soundin like crap.how do i get my kicks extremely punchy and in your chest. i want em to really blow the shit out of my speakers.help me out.
Re: Big fat punchy kicks.
I use 3 kicks, one each for crack, punch and low end.
Tune all three up together.
EQ each cutting all logicaly unwanted freq's from each one to avoid phase cancelation.
Buss/group to one track.
(I then use SSL Channal strip on the kick buss/group using its comprerssor and gate to 'gell' them together though sure Live has devices to do this also)
If your making tunes where the bass drum and bassline play at the same time either try some side chain or selective EQ to make some room.

Re: Big fat punchy kicks.
i am still new to the subject as well, but i generally throw in a compressor with release turned down and the attack up, then i add a 'kick huge warm' with the drive turned down and the output turned up, sometimes ill add a 'kick hard attack' that is plugged into the 'kick huge warm' and then i follow that with an eq8 with the low frequencies beefed up.
just comes down to whether you want a hard kick that 'punches' or a soft and deep kick that is more in the sub spectrum.
i'm still learning so i'm not sure if this is the right method (since there is no right method), but just experimenting with effects and knobs will help you to understand what each tweek is actually doing to your sound.

Re: Big fat punchy kicks.
Layer them.
Find one with plenty of punch and then a beefier one underneath it, like an 808 or something. Just make sure you use Spectrum (or your ears!) to ensure it isn't messing with your basslines!
Also, go to the main Ableton page and download the free KJ Sawka pack. Some fantastic samples in that.
