Would I invest in DJ specific software that is inferior in many ways to Traktor so I can use session view in it? Fuck no.
That about sum it up for me.

I look forward to seeing a proper demo of it, but at the moment the whole thing is looking vastly inferior to tracktor.

With tracktor, I am considering getting on fo the timecode reader audio interfaces - I have a pair fo CDJ1000 and tech 12 decks that I still use alot (that potentially could be used to drive either tracktor or serato with the right audio interface), and a VCI-100 for contolling trackor directly and a DJM-800 which I guess could be use for driving serato - so in either case for timecode control - i just need the hardware timecode reader.

The real question around the two of them is how well they actually sync - with tracktor and live running on two laptops this currently works well enough. Additionally with tracktor I have the option to travel light with just the vci-100 to control it. I have zero desire to invest in another controller for serato - especially if in the end I would actually loose functionality rather than gain (ie the midi sync).

Im not a hamster so I dont really care about scratching etc. I might care if the end result gave DJ style tempo control and sync nudging of live however.
Nothing to see here - move along!

The CEOs don't like each other, I suppose.
+1 - would have *much* preferred an NI partnership.

The reaction to this has been very interesting. There have been the expected "the game has changed" types offering opinion, but right now it seems to be a major tone of disappointment.

If you're disappointed, what was it that you were expecting from the partnership? What didn't you see that has led to the feeling of being let down?

Watching this video shows just how sick this colab is. With my VCI-300 and the addition of Maschine into my current setup plus the fact that this is FREE I'm in heaven! Now I'll just sweat the release date.

I'm absolutely not dissapointed,
this looks damn great!
I'm not deejaying but followed DJ Culture from the early 80's
and the possibilities this colabo offers a DJ is crazy cool!

I think people here were expecting that Live itself would benefit more from the collab, which makes sense as these are the Ableton forums. I think the collab is great for Serato users, but if you're a Live DJ, The Bridge really isn't all that interesting. Most Live DJ's have long since abandoned the need to have vinyl control in favor of MIDI controllers. So there's no real incentive to go backwards just to have better track browsing in Serato.

Most of the people on AbletonLiveDJ.com seemed to think all this might result in better DJ features in Live's session view. Things like on the fly looping, multiple cue point, or ever scratching/cueing directly in Clip view.

Like I said, if you're a Serato user, then I can definitely see how this collab is exciting. If you're a Live DJ though, there's very little benefits to make you want to invest in a Scratch interface.

two things i miss (and i miss in live just as well)

the ability to mix two live sets like they're just some mp3

the ability to mix mp3 in serato, and both of those output trough a live audio rack to allow own effects builtup (and this, too, bound with the time-matching functionality that's in there now)

which would need multiple ableton instances (most likely) to run in parallel with both having full hw access.

but no matter how hard it would be for the routing to set that up ,it would be fun :)

NI has always struck me as a company that's trying to muscle its way into everything. They're not a "do one thing, and do it well" company. They want to command the universe of hardware and software, DJ, studio, and stage. They're governed by greed.

Serato is a small company that only makes software, and they do it really well (in fact, Scratch Live has a better track record than Ableton Live when it comes to stability). Serato has a lot more in common with Ableton, then Ableton has with NI. I think when your philosophies are similar it more than makes up for geographical distances.

I can understand why some of you are disappointed with this release. If you don't use or plan to use Scratch Live or ITCH, then you are totally left out. A lot of the forum regulars are not going to benefit from this.

I made the decision a few years ago to get into Scratch Live. So to me this is really, really cool. My turntables and mixer sit right beside my studio desk, and now they're going to fuse together into one. It's fucking awesome!

The only thing I'm bummed about are that the waveforms in Live are going to remain the way they are. The frequency-colored waveforms in Scratch Live are so helpful, I was hoping Serato would share them with Ableton.

maybe with live 9? it would, indeed, be helpful.

there are two things to enhance waveforms: a) make them coloured like in scratch live, or b) make them black'n'white, but use cleartype like technology to enhance the horizontal resolution by a factor 3. this would lead to much more detail (in my case, it would be like having a 5760 pixel wide screen showing a wavefile, or 3840 on the laptop). best would be, both options.. of course.. :)

Reading all the comments on here has made me come to only one conclusion; People that love to bitch will bitch no matter what is announced.

Most of the whiners on here don’t even know what they wanted and even if Ableton and Serato announced everything imaginable through this partnership you people would still be bitching.

I have had Serato for about 4 years and Ableton for about 2. Now a FREE product comes that joins the two together. How can I be anything but super excited?

On top of all that, its not like the growth of this partnership seizes, it’s only going to grow and get better. Serato has always been on top of making sure their software works incredibly well and this will be no exception.

i think the main problem is, most people realised they don't have live and serato, so it's of no use for them... :) if i would have serato, yeah, i'd just hook up a turntable now, and always would use it to play/stop live. no matter if it's useful, it would feel awesome. and i'd love it.

but as a traktor and live user, this whole thing has 0 benefit for me, so i guess, yeah, i bitch around :)

LOL, there you have it. I don’t believe many people with both would complain because we know how much this will help. If you are a traktor user than of course this means nothing to you but there is no sense in trolling forums just bashing the product for the sake of bashing it.
