Copy and paste automation for a group of tracks?

Post by taximouse » Thu Jan 14, 2010 1:24 am

Don't know why I'm not finding this one in the manual.

Say I want to copy the contents of 6 tracks, to a different 6 tracks. I want to copy both clips and volume automations.

Right now, when I copy and paste, just the clips are pasted, not the volume automation. If I want to get the volume there I have to unroll the volume lane, then select and copy the automation...and paste it to the other track. Then, I can copy the clips.

Tedious. Must be a key combo for OS X that I'm unable to find.

I know that if I drag a clip as opposed to copy and paste, the automation comes with it. But dragging a string of clips is awkward and not what I want to do.

Thanks!

I think there might be a LOCK that you can turn off and on that will LOCK the envelopes to the clips :)

EDIT: wow.. nevermind. that is unfortunate :(

Every time I make changes to a project, I make an iteration of it "project1.1, project1.2" etc.
And for ease of editing I might make a submix of a bunch of tracks that I'm not editing in that iteration, and use them as a placeholder.

Then, when I'm finished with what I'm doing, I have to merge the projects, which involves opening the pre-submixed version and copying over the individual tracks. I find it maddening that I have to re-do the panning and volume automations, individually for every single track.

Or sometimes, I just want to copy a section of the project to another part of the project. I can't believe that the automations have to be copied separately from the clips. Its weird.

Occasionally, like now, I get frustrated and go looking through the manual....but I'm not finding a solution.

i,m not sure but try duplicating instead of copying them and see if that makes a differance

If you duplicate a section, you have to make sure there is blank space for it to the right, or you'll replace what is already there.

And you can't duplicate a section of a set and move it into another set without losing the automation.

But if there is a way I'd LOVE LOVE to hear it!!

Instead of highlighting the clips, highlight the tracks, right click, and duplicate.

that's an entirely different thing. i want to copy sections of a piece that might be 30 minutes long, and paste them, envelopes and all, somewhere else in the piece.
plus, still can't do it across 2 versions of a project...
thanks tho.

I find myself trying to do a similar thing and cannot seem to find a solution. I want to copy a range spanning multiple tracks, including the automation, from one document to another. No matter how I set lock envelopes I do not get the automation. Only the clips. I can copy and paste the automation for one track at a time, but that will take ages. Is there a solution that I haven't learned yet?

Thanks!

Find the liveset from which you're copying in one of your live browsers.
Expand the .als file and find all your tracks mentioned.
Drag & drop 1 or more tracks into your project.

Now the tracks + clips (session / arrangement) + automation is copied.
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately that will not solve the dilemma since dragging the tracks in from the browser creates new tracks. I would like to _extend_ the existing tracks in a _different_ document along with all the automation. Same arrangement of tracks / devices in both documents. Sorry, I was a bit misleading when I said new document. It is a little easier this way though because I can copy and paste from the new tracks to the proper ones then delete them afterward.
