This thing with linux and windows!?!?!?!?!
Windows just sucks(.) xp vista 7
I've been running on this linux (ubuntu studio) for a few years now and got to know the priority's of 'operating' it, e.g. installing by source, getting audio core drivers to work. Thinking maybe hoping that one day I would be able to convert to something like this for "real" audio work but its not worth the wait.
Reasoning why I've bothered to write about this is because I've recently had problems with windows xp... some kind of looping chkdsk on restart and had to recover from this error by deleting my minidump folder which is was a shot in the dark, successful i was but I know this would not have happened had I been running another operating system.
I understand the whole issue as to why a port to linux would or could be disastrous, and yes you would still need to know how to set the program up under linux, and yes you would still need 'real time kernel's' and extremely geeky stuff to get this to work but why..why not? Its a freakin stable platform to run it through, better then windows!
I don't have a problem with giving my tracks out for free, only because I know my work is shit.
BUT I do know many others that have career's in the market that TRY to earn a living... So why do they need to pay for another stupid operating system that sucks? The music industry has failed, 'changed'.
Many other programs have been ported to linux that you still must buy to actually use.
I'm possibly just burned by paying 200$ last year for nothing, only to have another version available that probably sucks just as much as vista., personally I think bill id just a dick./
The other option that I would be extremely happy to have available to me was if I could one day buy a copy of your wonderful program as a self booting stand alone!!! That way you'd still get paid for all the wonderful features, hard work and code and also be the first ever program to promote such independence.!
...beat me bite me tell me i'm a dirty dog just as long as theirs sex envolved, comments....plz

Re: This thing with linux and windows!?!?!?!?!
windows xp doesn't suck imo... it was/is a great os...
vista really sucked when it was out...but is already fixed now..
and win7 is da shit..
I think MacOS and Windows will always be ahead of the Linux curve...
if only for their deep market connections and hardware manufacturers compatibility..
sad...but true
but... if your tools run well on linux...
it's a great way to make a dedicated minimalistic music computer...
although I don't know Linux utilizes CPU and Memory any better..
also Linux demands waaay more hassle when installing ,customizing and tweaking..

Re: This thing with linux and windows!?!?!?!?!
also... you probly don't understand what's the difference between writing a program that operates within an OS...
and the OS itself...
writing an OS is very very Low Level programming ..

freebsd + openbox ftw.
oh, to make music?
you can definitely take that xp and make it run smoother a lot easier than you would trying to make ends meet in linux with ardour or trying to run whatever daw through wine.

Very true ardour & rosegarden both kinda sucks, and with wine.. wine I did try to run reaper with but took to many system resources to actually have it work correctly.mihai wrote:you can definitely take that xp and make it run smoother a lot easier than you would trying to make ends meet in linux with ardour or trying to run whatever daw through wine.
Xp has worked fine for a long long time without any problems but WHEN theirs a problem its always a stupid windows unknown crash.
@ ShelLuser,
You have some extremely good points./ I claim to know "some" linux, but just enough to say I hate windows. I don't think I'm a troll ..maybe? I haven't posted much in the last year ever since I moved anyway. Thanks for the good points.
...by the way I seem to bring this up once a year and I distinctly remember asking at the end of the thread; So what about the option to boot just ableton!?
because in the end that's all I really care about, that and adobe.
Re: This thing with linux and windows!?!?!?!?!
troll?
what could be more stable than xp
you could leave it running for months at a time

That's funny(were you being sarcastic?). At my job we have xp computers in remote industrial locations. Leaving any kind of regular consumer grade Windows installation for a long period of time is a no no. We've had so many problems with this we schedule a reboot every week. We have to use XP due to certain software compatibilities and such.
Anyway. IMO Windows 7 really is a great operating system. Uses memory way more efficient(much like linux and mac os) than XP. The task bar puts the dock to shame and you can multi-task very well with it. I have a mac book pro but have not run a Mac OS since 7 came out. Mac OSX is awesome compared to XP and Vista. To 7 it's really just nothing. If you want something more like Linux as an OS then I would just tell you to build a hackintosh or buy a mac and run Mac OS.
I'm a Linux administrator at work too and I can tell you Linux is in no shape or form ready for mainstream music applications to come to its platform.

Do you leave them running programs constantly all the time? Or just leave them up idle? I'm going to have to call your bluff and prove you wrong with some videos and screen shots.longjohns wrote:nodothedru22 wrote:

Re: This thing with linux and windows!?!?!?!?!
well at work it just runs FedEx Ship Manager. So, that just sits there except during the day when you're entering packages.
At home I've been leaving my music comp off. But previously I'd leave it on, mostly because the power supply was going bad and it was difficult to turn on (replaced now)
So the only running programs on there would be BCView, Live, Max Runtime, monomeserial... maybe Reason
maybe it is because that computer has only SP1 and almost all services turned off, all unused hardware disabled at the BIOS level, no networking, only one USB device, etc.

anyway, i don't really care, i was just offering a trolling post, because that apology for "trolling" was so weird
Re: This thing with linux and windows!?!?!?!?!
Ive had xp machines running for literally 3+ months at a time if not longer. One machine in particular downloaded 10+ torrents at a time all day long for the duration, with constant internet browsing and other stuff going on as well.dothedru22 wrote: Do you leave them running programs constantly all the time? You cant prove it wrong, it happened
As far as the quality of Windows, the following quote sums it up:

Re: This thing with linux and windows!?!?!?!?!
Lots of folks have Windows machines that didn't give them nightmares. The are just not as vocal as the folks that do have problems. I didn't turn my XP machine off for over 7.5 months. There was no reason to, everything just worked. And the only reason I did turn it off was to add a second drive. I recently bought a mac but it wasn't because the windows machine was a bad machine.Donnie wrote:You cant prove it wrong, it happened![]()
