Any game changing Plugs like the BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer?

Post by infiniteB » Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:28 pm

Any game changing Plugs like the BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer? Any plugs that do what "you can't do by simply processing something through it" or that change the name of the game by its innovation/quality/superiority? Or that give you "movie-quality" sound as opposed to just "professional audio"? Sonic Processors, Mastering tools, Delays, Reverbs, etc... anything.

Yeah, the plug that connects my equipment to the building electricity. Simply couldn't do without it!

I've liked Waves plugs for a while. Just used their R-Bass to fatten the low end of some Abba tracks; worked simply and well.

A dumb question I know, but does this BBE plug surpass the waves ultramaximizer?

They're totally different beasts that do different things. The BBE, by using phase manipulation, modifies the harmonic content of audio. ie it adjusts tone. The Ultramaximizer modifies the dynamics of the audio. ie volume.

for me the 2 that fit that description are the BBE D82 (indeed) and the sonnox limiter. one tier down would be the sonalksis stereo tools.

flux solera. might still be at 50% off too.

but i guess any great plug could change the game if you knew it inside and out.

Stereoiser by NuGen Audio (currently free as a cm edition on CM disks)

Tapehead Medium by Massey, Free and awesome in conjunction with vintage warmer if you own in it.

Vintage Warmer by PSP, if you don't own this, you are a fool.

Airwindows Classic Channel, API, Neve, SSL desk channel emulator, free and just one of those 'makes shit sound good' plugs.

Stillwell Audios Rocket Compressor. Again, only some kind of idiot freak would not have this!

Tried that and hated it. Found it far too OTT, and all this Old-Skool-Vintage-Tube-Emulation shite does my head in

There are a lot of plugins I hear great things about, but which can be hard to try out.

For example...
- Softube CL1B Compressor
- Waves CLA bundle (emulations of 1176, LA-2A etc.)
- URS Channel Strip Pro v2 or other plug-ins from this developer.
- Sonalksis plug-ins
- SoundToys bundle

However, the only ones that don't need an iLok to try out are from Sonalksis. I'm almost tempted to pick up an iLok just to see if they really are all that. I'm looking for some characterful compressors and EQs for mixing to complement the Live ones.

Then there's things like the UAD plugins (a lot of talk about the Fatso plugin for instance) but again there's no way to test it out unless you actually have a UAD card.

Ozone izotpe can achive something like the bbe with theire multiband harmonic exciter and the multiband stereo imaging..
they have a cool timelimited demo that you can actually use without perforating your ears.

UAD Fatso and Fatso Snr, put simply, does what PSP Vintage Warmer can, without any harshness, then some! A bit tricky to get right initially, but with practice, brilliant. If I had enough DSP, I'd use it on everything
ITS NOT WHAT YOU GOT.........

I think whether they are game changers or not depends on how you use them mostly. Otherwise you're probably just getting lists of plugs that people have actually got.
