Max for live purchase

I am confusedd re: max for live purchase and whether full verson of Max4live is included or needed. I am new so I am sorry if this is an old question. I checked on the upgrade shop and it said 299 to upgrade to max4live.

Do I need to purchase Max on top of this?

I have the Max demo that is about to expire and I have a new monome. Several of the monome app work with max runtimme but I was under the impression that the Max4live apps require live + Max plus Max for live connector which gets costly but the upgrade link said 299 for max4live if I didn't have Max. Is this a special Ableton deal on Max or iis it Max4live with Max runtime. Also what about msp and jitter

M4L monome apps will all function perfectly without Max unless they use Jitter for video (and I don't know of any that do, yet). The free Max runtime will also allow you to use any standalone Monome app. Unless you want to build your own patches that run outside of Live, you do not need to buy Max itself.
