One thing I noticed was at the University I attended, more than half of the students seemed to live locally and just go home and not participate much in getting drunk at the Student Union bar, many of them lived at home and had boyfriends/girlfriends/fiances etc. Almost all the cool people I knew at Uni in London were not from London.
Things have changed a bit for the better. For example, Wendy Carlos was known as Walter Carlos when I first heard of him/her
I also still think most people connected to producing and enjoying electronic music are geeks. This seems to annoy some people, but not me. So what. I'd rather be a geek than someone who buys Britney Spears and Lady Gaga records just to be popular. Listening to how some of us (self included big time) talk about music and technology gear lust past and present confirms this. I love talking about plugins and analogue filterbanks as much as some girls love talking about shopping - so what ! Better this than some dumb jock who likes country music. Nothing wrong with being a nerd
