Try reading what I wrote again: what I said is that it is a free update from 8.0.x to 8.1 - I didn't say anything about a free upgrade from version 7 to version 8.
You might want to work on your english a tad before flying off the handle about something that you misinterpreted.
thats exactly what i understood..and i said that there is no point in beeing thankfull for a "free" update that instead fixing all the bugs just inflects even more and bigger problems.
Theese windy "Quality" anouncement just after that little crime dont makes it undone..
it wasnt the kind of update useres can avoid..
1) is was crashing all over before
2) it was endangering the pa systems and ears of the audience, musicans can be sewed for such "accidents"
3) main promised functionality wasnt included before L8.1
bringing a new file format in such a situation is rather ruthless..
sorry... i am really not thankfull for that free update.. which anyway came muc to late..
that should have been the update 2 month after release..than your point maybe would have been valid..and the harm done by the formerly created content in L8.0 would have been not as big...
+100000
let's just say the 'apology' was the LEAST they could have done... and they have...
but I'm getting sick of the crashes the unpredictable behavior of the software...
the vague 'marketing tricks' that are being called that just so I don't have to call them 'lies'..
but I do..
Ableton needs to fix their product.. and then start by fixing/building the trust of their user base again.

Thanks for the replies
Do I end up with with 2 ASD files then - As I like to use both programs. I own 6 but use the demo of 8 every now and again to pick up on the new instruments. I have a lot of problems with 8 crashing on my current setup so would not be worth me upgrading right now as 6 is solid.
Its a lot of warping if I have to do files for both

no.. the asd files overwrite each other because they have the same name.. you need extrem caution wehn safing the results of your work.. best to have an own folder with all L8 related and never safe from L6 inside there.. or the other way around.. it´s german engineering at its best

Scratch that - although warping changed, apparently you shouldn't have to re-warp. Just came across this thread ->

Post subject: Re: Live 8.0.6 not reading Live 7.0.18's warp markers properly
Hi samtastic,
your Live 7 markers should be read correctly. Which operating system do you use? Do you have the latest version of Quicktime installed?
Best,
Jörg

I am not so sure about that.. that bad immage ableton has with me now is mostly based on that single fact.. the bugs was very annoying.. but thats the shit that happens.. torture by design or biz reasons is another pair of shoes..
you talk about backwards compatibility and use mac? wtf?

Ableton keeps getting richer .while the software (...and users) is getting poorer...

it's another conspiracy theory.
it would suck to make Live backwards compatible, talk about fucked up code bloat, think about it FFS. how would you have written Live 2 so that it would someday be able to read a Live 8 file with max4Live devices, drum racks, regular racks, complex warp mode, track groups, sidechain compression and other stuff that's been added ever since? you could only do that with very careful planning and a LOT of unnecessary code overhead.
think about it.

maybe you're over-thinking it TD.
when I think backward compatible, all I'm thinking of is an option in Live8 (forexample): File>Export_As_LIVE7SET
and voila, a live7 set is saved. anything conceptually incompatible would be rendered into audio clips where possible, and at least you can go to your gig with a rock-solid performance for those who'd want such things. ideally I'd like this for a live4 set, seeing as I still use live4 frequently. it would be a huge time saver...but I digress...
it's bad for business though, and considering they rely on paying customers to bug-hunt for them - it's bad for that too.
furthermore, I believe they ought to provide new customers with last years model (at least), but that won't happen for the reasons above. but it is totally the right thing to do considering the state of the software they sell.
but you know what I think.

true, I can see that. seems like a feature request. I do see how it forces peoples' hands to buy the latest. they get me every year just so I can keep up with the weird stuff people do with this software.

the thing is, if live 7 was still for sale on their website and in stores - people would still be buying it. They could be beta testing live8 for a much longer period, open to existing licensees only, and they could get into selling content for yearly cash-fixes in addition to live7 sales.
their rep would be untarnished, user goodwill would continue to grow rather than diminish almost daily as it seems...
I've beta tested software like this before, where version Z was beta tested for the longest time, but was only open to existing Y licensees.
Annnnnnnnnyways. I'm outta the upgrade loop, this is just a hope for the future....and a fervent prayer.

true. given that my account only has codes going back to Live 3 I doubt I can activate Live 2, so I get the impression that if someone just bought Live 8 they can't activate Live 7. talk about bad timing. with the Quality announcement Ableton should have opened up Live 7 for new Live 8 users.
how do other DAWs treat this mess? can you open new stuff in older versions? can you download older versions?

probably for all the same reasons Ableton don't allow it either...
what other daws have you used 3dot ? ..and in terms of stability how do they all compare ? Also, what about advertised features...do they work as advertised ?
I'm putting pennies away for logic, but I'll be scouting around for a logic8 version
