Honestly, they're French, they probably just scrutinize every detail.

Hey petit nuage! nice to see you here ;)
do you think is precise midi programming off the grid or midi programming , recording in audio and chopped ,sliced to get individual note and reprogramming precisely in audio ,OFF THE GRID ?
all that, yes. and more

the key to this "funk" groove is the good use of syncopation (perhap's what you call "off grid"), think about these slapped bass notes that appear here and there, just "re-launching" the groove.. and also for little chopped samples that fill the gaps of the binary riddim.

and try to make a return track with fx stuff (reverbs, saturation, gates) sidechain-compressed by the kick, and send in that chain some other stuff (hihats, snare, high end of synths...) then gate again, and so on...

their tracks are hyper-over-produced from bottom to top and left to right...

experimentation is the only way.

they didn"t create "their" sound with 2 or 3 simple rules, but I guess they learnt lots of useful stuff from... well... dunno who

good luck

cheers

:D salut l'ami !!!

big thanks for your time and explanations monster jumo ..

very intersting..

from left to right ..you talk about panning no ?

from bottom to top about reverb /filter or what ?

when you talk about the fx on sends..is it just one send but with fx in a chain like fx instrument rack ?

i dont have well understood this part of your explanation could you describe me a bit more please(like a little and quick step by step ..) ..it will be soo greeaat !!

for the other stuff that you send into that chain ..are their outputs send only or ?

what is your use of gate in this technique ?

 sorry im a bit newie in routing /sidechaining stuff like that ..plus my english is quite soo bad héhé

grand merci a toi !!!

when you listen to their first tracks they were quite simpler in their construction compared to genesis ,stress ,dvno or dance ..maybe the meeting with sebastiAn, jackson or oizo have been instructive.. i dont know ..but the difference is clear ..

I was just meaning they over hyper produce their stuff, but your interpretation is also valid

I'll be back, no time now ;)

I really think it's just finesse, time, and talent. They must spend an epic amount of time writing these tunes. Most everyone successful does. I remember an interview with Noisia that said they spent the better part of a month on one bassline.

8O ..wow .. IMO you are right ..written a scenario/storyboard + good sounds (well designed and maybe premixed with eq , comp, distortions ,..) + big zooms + moving audio files here and there to achieve the groove ..and
maybe they do basic mix like volume ,pan ,reverb ,delays ..

so talent /imagination + good taste and lot of time and work ..

i ask myself a question :

do they premix/clean , their sounds like drums basses etc.. using eqs, comps whatever..but printed in the audio files ..so they work from here without any fx after or maybe just on the master bus ?

or they put fx on the differents tracks and they mix along the process ,keeping the fx activates in order to change settings if they need ?

maybe a bit of the two ..

if you have some ideas tell me ..

thanks !!!

if you listen to Busy P's productions, you'll see that he is really far from reproducing this "ed banger" sound...

he is more into fidget and fat bouncy club tracks now...

I guess Sebastian and Mr oizo are much more involved into this influence process.

anyway, I don't know Justice's men, but, with all the hate and love they got, they still are great composers...

any artist has its own influences.

Squarepusher... is it a lone-sword-man????

this brilliant artist has also its influences...

Every great and talented producer has influences.

and lots of time involved in the evolution process of his "sound" or "genre"....

everyone of us has dreamt of an "aphex twin plugin" or "ed banger plugin"...

the only solution is :

TIME, and EXPERIENCE.

cheers

@ monsieur le monstre gentil : héhé je trouve aussi :D
and you are totally right on the music process thing mon ami !

The thing that if find a bit "problematic",for ME of course , with live by exple is that you may become a bit lazy because of the session view's power which facilitate so much and so many things that you can loose yourself in that experimentation phase...

Im talking about my case of course
but i love sooo much this session view héhé.

And justice guys talk a lot about garage band and cubase sx but as they are smart and love apparently create "wrong tracks" with journalist and in interviews, so im asking myself if they just dont use ableton for all your production stuff ?

I dont know ...

p.s :about "we are your friends"... ive read in an interview that they made it with "only" an akai sampler and a sequencer here : http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Justice.-a0178348085

la bise

I don't think they compose in ableton live, they use it for live shows, but I'm pretty sure they use much something like cubase, logic or protools for the composition side of things

cheers

Yeah..i remember a topic here ,wherein, krazy baldhead (pedroo) talks about pro tools if i remember right.
SO i think its a good source .

Ahh i hope that ableton for a live 8.5 version or in live 9 (it will be a long wait ...) implement "the bounce in place" logic like feature .
To improve the editing side of live with this great , time saver , and sooo essential function.(IMO)

edit :I dont know if you know them but some people told me that these guys use ableton (plus cubase for dilemn) for their tracks (but i dont know if its totally true ..) :
-IMO they are talented -

http://www.myspace.com/bestrackprod

http://www.myspace.com/dilemn31 (ahh toulouse...not to lose of course -bad joke- :D )

p.s : And yes give a marketing and hype creator's award for pedro winter .
This guy is soooo clever and smart . yeah genius in a way .

yes Dilemn makes great sounding tracks, I like bestrack less, but good productions too

I don't really know why, but if I had to vote, I'd say these guys use Logic and the logic VIs... they all have the same sound....????

I maybe totally wrong, it's just an intuition

cheers

My sources come from myspace's guys who had asked them directly.
