You think Live's reverb on eco is efficient? Try this...

I mentioned this in another thread, but I think it deserves it's own. Live's reverb in eco mode can take about 2 or 3% cpu which is good. But this one uses about 1%! And it does all kinds of other stuff too. Pretty cool if you ask me.

The examples sound good, but I'm at the brink of my understanding when it comes to the world of Reverb.
Sometimes the boundaries betweenthe different methods become blurred.
Sometimes I wonder why certain methods have been followed for so long.
EG: compare the combfilter->Allpass method with an FDN
the first roughly describes what I understand/guess to be Live's own reverb.
But when does an feedback/forward combfilter into allpass method actually become a Feedback Delay Network?
Surely if you feedback/forward a tuned comb then you are effectively defining an FDN. And if you add an allpass series, shouldn't that improve upon the pseudo FDN?
Is an FDN just freeverb without the allpasses?
or is it all down to the subtlety of the FDN matrix gain values and routing?
FDN's don't look too hard to make, so why aren't we all making them?
Why do we mess about with allpasses at all?
I did mention that reverb confuses me, didn't I.

If reverb confuses you any where as much as your post just confused me, then I think we're both fucked!
I don't think I'm ready to click on any of your links...

I also failed to understand a single word of Angstrom's post.
Live's reverb used to confuse me completely, no matter what I tried it sounded crap for me and I hated looking at it. Terrible relationship with that thing.
The confusion ended last night when I bought AudioDamage's eos. Absolutely what I'd been looking for all this time and the GUI actually makes sense to me. Happy happy.

Is the Diffuse knob on Live's reverb the same as Confuse ?glitchrock-buddha wrote:If reverb confuses you any where as much as your post just confused me, then I think we're both fucked!![]()

If so just turn it down for less confusion.
Not sure if this will work in Eco mode...

Re: confusion.
sorry about that - I was referring to how software reverbs are done.
I started to explain again what each of them are, but I realised it's quite a complex topic even the basic concepts need a paragraph. So I'll just stop!
I will be attempting to tear my ears off by making an FDN in Reaktor this weekend though.
I love feedback matrixes anyway.
I wish Live allowed us to do them "in-Rack" , a matrix of effect sends is the closest we have

.. I must be dumb. I'm happy with Live Reverb.
I know that for serious Vocals Reverb there are other expensive options but for what I do
is ok. It became better since V8 when more preset where organized in the library but I do agree that Interface at the beginning can be confusing. Maybe the representation of the room you're creating and the early reflection lines on it might help have a better understanding of the virtual space we're building and sure a more verbose indication about the materials of the various space faces (pavement, vs walls) will improve that. However Live Reverb is very tweak-able once you understand the various knobs function... it took me a lot of time and still no expert...
. I think everybody gets confused by too many options.

But also this one sports more or less the same controls. If the algorithm makes a Reverb a champion than Ableton should work in that direction. But is the algorithm or the GUI that need to be changed?

that TC Electronic M30 reverb someone posted here recently is great - I find I keep using it
I have the Waves IR-L and maybe when I eventually get around to finding that folder I have somewhere of impulse responses I might only use that, but I just find I keep opting for M30

Anyone notice that Liove's reverb sound better in eco mode? Less smooth yes, but waaayyy less metallic.
And sure the M30, EOS etc. are very nice, but they use some cpu. Reverbs often use as much as an instrument. And my point about Ariesverb is that it uses 1% on my machine! That's unheard of even with native reverbs.

As I said, I was never capable of making Live's reverb sound any good, maybe that's just me, PLUS I couldn't make sense of the GUI, so for me, both elements sucked.Pasha wrote: But also this one sports more or less the same controls. As for Eos, man, it's pretty, and the controls just seem to produce the results I expect. Plus to my ears, it sounds great. Yes, it's CPU use is higher than 1% but it's pretty low.
Re: You think Live's reverb on eco is efficient? Try this...
You're not dumb Pasha. But maybe I am too. I'm no expert at Live's reverb, but I've got it to sound good for my music (and sometimes, oddly, eco mode IS better than high quality). Angstrom, you are way over my head, but I appreciate the information greatly.
A hidden gem for Zebra users is the Zebrify's reverb module which I think sounds quite good. Only one of 'em though per instance. But there's two delays in there.

Get a convolution reverb (any will do, from Cubase and Logic's inbuilt one's to altiverb or whatever in between)
Then get the Bricasti M7 reverb unit impulses (free download from Acousticas, an Impulse generating firm who sell quality impulses of Lexicon reverbs etc) - (download the zip file and put the impulses into your reverb's impulse directory after unzipping)
http://www.acousticas.net/World/IRs/AcousticasM7.zip
if you doubt my word, you can take Chris Lord-Alge's or Al Schmitt, 2 world famous grammy award winning mixers and plenty of others
http://www.bricasti.com/testamonials.html
The Bricasti M7 hardware reverb unit typically sells for around $3700
http://www.mercenary.com/bricasti-m7.html
SORTED !
It kind of feels dirty to have such quality for the cost of a free download (which isn't illegal at all but feels like it is when you hear the quality of these impulses), but you'll get over it
