question about multiple remote midi controllers
question about multiple remote midi controllers
hey I was wondering the best way to allow my whole midi rig to remote control live. For live shows I want to connect my Microkontrol, UC33, Behringer FC1010, and maybe a nord lead. Live only allows 2 control devices. In the studio I want to additionally utilize my motormix and 88 key controller. I can use all as inputs for midi channels just not remote control. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!

How you do it is going to depend on what platform you're on - PC or Mac. PC You're going to have to use a combination of something like MIDI Yoke along with another program such as Max or PD (or others) to process and route your MIDI - it depends on how complicated/simple your routing is going to be
Pure data

is like a free version of Max/MSP. Works similar - it's like a visual programming language where you construct your programs by plugging blocks together ala modular systems like Reaktor. The learning curve is pretty steep mind you.

I found a workaround for this, but it will eat up 1 midi in port and 1 midi out port. simply create a monitored midi track for each device that you have input to live, and route them all to a single midi output. use a midi cable to loop back into another midi input, and use this midi input as your remote control device. i have a uc 16, 2 radium 49s, a microkontrol, and a keystation 49 all acting as remotes for ableton using this method. to keep the controllers from overlapping, I output each one to a different midi channel, and then set up Live's midi controls accordingly. this method can also be used to "automate" parameters by using midi tracks with controls sequenced out.
