Live Piano / Live Drums

Post by digitallush » Sun Jan 31, 2010 3:59 pm

This was our 2nd jam session... still have a lot to work out but we were pleased with the way this came out - still need to fix drums... sorry about audio quality - will hopefully have a better version up soon.

Not the best piano sample in the world and way too much reverb on everything. I know you think it sounds great but you need to find a balance unless you were going for that stadium sound. And you were right.... the audio quality is very poor and it reduce the listening pleasure so I turned it off after a short while. It's understood that it's a work in progress but prefer that you finish or at the least clean it up before posting. Keep at it and thanks for the share.

You're whole "I'm a self-important douchebag" shtick is starting to get real old. Just sayin'...

As for the piece, it was pretty good. I'd suggest, if at all possible (which I realize may not be the case) to switch to a real drum kit to make the whole thing feel more, well, real. And I'd say to go with more of the live piano playing and less messing with the APC, as the actual piano parts were pretty cool, but it seemed to me that a good portion of the video was spent, as I've seen with a lot of people doing electronic-y type stuff, turning knobs and being all slidey with sliders to no real audible affect. And while yes I respect the plight and aspirations of the electronic musician, live instrumentation is always far more entertaining to watch.

All that said, I found myself at the end of the video looking at the time bar thinking, "Shit, I hadn't realized I'd been listening to this for that long," which is always a good sign. Keep it up.

Just a general comment - regardless of whether or not someone is getting an ego trip off of posting shit on message boards, I'm here to learn, and I can listen and get constructive crit from just about any comment, regardless of how convoluted it may appear to be. Regardless - I didn't really get a "i'm a self-important douchebag" vibe - but it's irrelevant.

Switching to a real drum kit is out of my capabilities at the moment - I've always had an affinity for acoustic instruments (being a pianist myself - I COMPLETELY understand the desire to use real instruments / make digital instruments sound real) - I can take your comment on spending time on the apc40 to heart - and this is one of my biggest 'beefs' or challenges when working in ableton - I don't care to be messing with my apc40 unless it really is creating an audible effect, and for the most part, I would have to disagree - the only time I'm on it, I'm bringing in delays or launching clips / filter sweep etc...

I agree that live instrumentation is more entertaining to watch - but the apc40 is an instrument no different than a piano or a drum kit - it just takes practice to be able to use it fluidly - which I'm working on.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, but the reason I do post it to the forum is to make it better so all feedback is welcome.

Thanks for your guys' input - it will make my future sets better, and for that I'm grateful for your time. :)

Hey Digi, I didn't mean to come off as all high and mighty, just give an honest opinion. Sometime I may be a little obtuse but most of it is all in fun. However, just like everyone else Crashofgods is entitled to his opinion. I wish everyone the best.

feedback is appreciated...always. only feedback that isn't helpful is when nothing constructive can be pulled from it.
