Apogee Duet...good soundcard to DJ live?

Post by Evin Kepik » Thu Feb 04, 2010 10:33 am

So I know the Apogee Duet's output and headphones are tied together. So you wouldn't be able to cue. Do people still use it for DJing live or would you guys recommend another soundcard? Since I have the Duet, I don't want to get another soundcard that's too expensive, I just want something that I can DJ with for gigs and would like it if its Firewire. The M-Audio Firewire Solo looks decently priced, but I was wondering if that soundcard's only output is tied in with the headphone output.

I'm new to the world of Ableton Live or pretty much using any DAW. I'm a Serato user and was intrigued by the The Bridge. I have already started learning on Logic (before The Bridge announcement), but I put that aside to focus on learning Ableton now.

With that being said, I know when The Bridge is released, I wouldn't need another soundcard other than my existing Rane SL3 unit. But that's only if I run the Ableton clips in Scratch Live. If I wanted to run Ableton Live on its own, that's probably where I'm going to need soundcard.

well, it is a very good card, but i personally prefer to be able to send more then one stereo pair to a hardware mixer...

if you are happy with doing all your mixing in the box and just sending out a master... then the duet is fine (the card itself is really, really good, it is only a matter if the limited I/Os are to your satisfaction or not)

I wish there was DJ version with separate phone out, wouldnt be difficult to modify, I know from a friend at a music store that there are people asking same question everyday, not just once.

if you're on 10.6 can't you just use the aggregate device functionnality to bundle up your duet with the built-in output and use the latter as a separate output for your headphones?

I've read about that, but it seems there's always problems occurring when doing so. I'll try later for myself and see what I come up with.
