I have a nice Asus made for gaming that works great for Live, though it needed a separate interface.

Do NOT buy an HP unless you don't mind the hinges breaking and the screen not staying open, happened to mine and they recalled a later series. Just get an Acer or Asus all that shit is made in Taiwan, might as well get it straight from them.

a few years back I worked for a company that fixed computers for commercial and home use. Sony Vaios never impressed me and some of the guys I worked with used to make a good deal of jokes at their expense. I'm not saying they suck or anything, and time has passed, but as a Windows user I'd buy a Mac first.

I was not happy with my acer. It didnt fuck up. It was just a weak build, I could twist the whole thing at least a centimeter! 8O  And it sometimes got so hot I had to use a special cooler system under neath. It was noisy as hell too. In fact I have kept it, because the specs are nice. But its so noisy I cant really use it indoor.

I've had very good luck with an HP DV8000 laptop running Win XP. no construction issues, and I've travelled around with it plenty. the only thing about is that the shift key gets stuck from time to time. GREAT box because it has two hard drive bays in it, a rare thing in laptops (it was when I shopped for it.) OS and apps on one, data on the other.

the laptop can even *gasp* have a stable midi sync with outboard gear.

I started with Live 5 on that box. Live gets bigger, microprocessor stayed the same. the ol' girl ain't as light on her feet as she used to be.

YMMV

Not exactly true the carbon made SZ, and Z series are definitely more solid then MBP but more expensive too. Like most Sony excellent professional level products and same like everyones else consumer trash just bit more expensive. AW,FW and now F series are OK, probably better deal then any other pc notebook.
What was always Vaio advantage - TI chips for everything.
Macs are not really more expensive, if you want same CPU power, battery life, display quality- pc will cost you same and there wont be many to choose from. I dont think there is any pc notebook to match new Apples touchpads, for me first touchpad ever that I actually like using.
IBM no question best build best cooled notebooks with terrible - for audio- Ricoh chips, lousy displays, and boring, ugly look. I had Thinkpad and hated every single day, hour , minute seeing this ugly byatch. Good for insurance salesman or policeman. Seriously though, give them better displays, illuminated keys and MBP style touchpad - could be best touring musician notebook, but I dont think IBM Lenovo cares at all for creatives, their market are boring people.
