want Live as rewire slave to Protools, but it disables VSTs
I have used Live as a rewire slave to Protools, but all my many VST plugins vanish in Live. I paid for the full license for Live to use these VSTs (I had the lite version already)
Since I only use RTAS versions of these plugins in Protools, what is the purpose of this? This is really a big obstacle for me
I could easily run VSTs in a Bidule host as a rewire slave to protools with loads of RTAS VIs active
I want to use Live with 16 reqire channels, so that as well as composing in Live, I can sometimes use it as a host for VSTs to call out to from PT
any ideas on removing this strange constraint?
thanks
Tone

Re: want Live as rewire slave to Protools, but it disables VSTs
there is no way around it (I don't know about Bidule), live does not host 3rd party plugins as a rewire slave.
However, since you're routing the audio to Protools via rewire, just add the effects on the individual rewire channels in protools (rtas or if pthd, rtas and tdm).
The only possible benefits I can see in having the plugins available in Live is to avoid plugin constraints in PTLE, or using up 'voices' in a PTHD system which if you have a lower grade PTHD system such as HD1, could be problematic.
Oddly enough, the $59 Renoise 2.5 does allow you to use vst/au in rewire slave mode. Obviously, it's a totally different program (based upon trackers) but has added a pattern matrix in the new release.

thanks for the advice. I am running Protools HD (32 bit) on 64 bits windows, so I can't get past about 3GB inside PT.leedsquietman wrote:there is no way around it (I don't know about Bidule), live does not host 3rd party plugins as a rewire slave.

I just upgraded to 64 bit and 12GB, so I want to have another host outside PT to use more VSTs and memory, so I thought I should be able to:
(1) compose in Live then rewire to PT without having to freeze all the tracks first
(2) use Live as a host for VSTs to expand my options a bit for PT itself - as I say Bidule allows this
I will have a look at renoise. thanks for that
Cheers

well, Live is still a 32 bit app, so the max you can access in it is going to be the same 3GB as in PT.
You could consider getting Reaper, this is a 64 bit program which allows hosting of VSTs and is a pretty great DAW program. You can trial it for free for 30 days, and a non commercial license costs 60 bucks.

Re: want Live as rewire slave to Protools, but it disables VSTs
I would try reaper as a DAW if I was starting out (in fact I downloaded the demo out of interest), but I have used a $20k Protools rig for the last 10 years, so I would be downgrading and losing the DAW for which I have most skills. reaper does look good value though.

Well I hear ya, but remember, once upon a time a DVD player cost 2000 dollars (you can pick them up for like 40 bucks or less now), a black and white laptop computer which was basically only functional as a word processor cost 5000 dollars, etc, etc.
The reason I actually mentioned Reaper was the fact that Reaper can be used as a rewire SLAVE (well it works in Cubase and Live, so I assume it would work in Protools) hence you can use that program to host vsts in and rewire to Protools as the master.
You can download Reaper and try it as a demo for 30 days to see if it would work out for you.

Re: want Live as rewire slave to Protools, but it disables VSTs
The PT stuff is still way too expensive, but since it's a standard in itself and offers more as a DAW, and I have used it for 10 years and have all my sessions in it, I'll stick with it for now as my main DAW. Just trying to explain why I've gone too far to back out easily from PT now
I'll try Reaper as a slave tonight!

I know this is an old thread, but you could just freeze & then flatten the tracks in Live. This will render all your Instruments, plus effects, as audio. When you rewire into protools, it will already be pre-processed, so you don't need to actually be running the VSTs.
Only problem is if you were planning to be playing the VSTs live while rewired, but that doesn't sound like what you were aiming for.

I was just thinking of using live as a bank of synths with midi sends from protools, so it wouldn't workhuzzam wrote:I know this is an old thread, but you could just freeze & then flatten the tracks in Live.
