What do I sound like?

Post by CasioSpitTake » Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:07 am

Hi -
I've made a few songs and now i want to share them. I have a myspace site and a LastFM site. The thing is that I'd like to reference other bands/artists that sound similar but for the life of me can't think of any. I think that by referencing similar bands then I'll have a greater chance of sharing my music with like-minded people. If you've got a moment, I'd appreciate any thoughts on artists/bands who sound similar to my music. You can hear my tracks at: http://www.myspace.com/casiospittake
Cheers

There are many in this forum that render tracks similar in terms of the samples used however you do have a distinct sound. Soiler has quite a few mixing issues where everything is just loud as can be along with the horrible compression that Myspace adds, it's very unappealing to listen to for more than a few seconds although it's a nice track. The vox sample is inaudible and nothing is in its own space. Deep Think.... is mixed a bit better but still suffers from typical beginner's problem of space and gain staging. Hereto, a nice idea gone bad due to poor mixing technique and the annoying ubiguitous dialog. You should have another crack at re-mixing it to jell the sounds together. It will prove to be more appealing and enjoyable to listen to, but, that's just my humble opinion and doesn't really count for sh*t. Just an advent listerner. Work hard and study more. Thanks for sharing.

There are literally tons of vids out on Youtube and even right on the Tips n Tick forum here at able to learn thing. Start here http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27120 if you like and do a search on mixing on Youtube, Vimeo and other websites. It may seem overwhelming at first but as you view them you will see that the concepts are the same and they overlap. Don't try to learn it all in a minute. It will take time but you will learn a lot and you will apply what you pick up to your works of art. Keep your head up because you're doing just fine. :D

I found these articles very helpful for mixing:

Helped me improve my mixing massively in just one try.

Oh and as for sounds like.

Both songs actually remind me of older Chemical Brothers stuff.

Solier sounds kinda like some older prodigy stuff.

And Deep Thinking People reminds me of Lemon Jelly.

I really your songs. I kinda set out to do stuff like this but have ended up going in a very different direction.

Keep it up and just sort mixing out and youll have some very good songs

Hey JoshR -

The vocal sample is taken from a series of Philosophy audiobooks by Daniel Robinson. Happy to send you them if you'd like?
