Re: [UPDATE 6] APC40 Control Surface - DJ Edition (The Finger?)

Post by S4racen » Sun Jan 31, 2010 6:14 pm

Update 7:

Added the ability to trigger the highlighted clip from scene one, a reverse effect (the fp reverser from max4live.com) to the stop all clips button, scene four has a set of four different beatrepeats on it whilst scene five.....

Recreates what i imagine the finger does.... Fill the first eight sends with effects you like, then in scene five the clip stop buttons route the audio to the 8 sends, the first clip stop button pressed then disables the ability to send the original audio to all 8 sends and have a dramatic increase in volume.... Instead the second, thirtd fourth fifth etc. clip stop button pressed will instead control the sends on the first send chosen allowing you to send say the audio to a revrb first and then chain it ino a beat repeat for example.... Completely configurable to the effects you want but chevthewizard and GBSR along with Rus-Audio have put out some pretty fantastic rack effects that can be "played"!

JuanSOLO sent me his customised version of the control surface patch last night and it really takes things to the next level for configurability... We've got some additional features to add but it is now possible to set up to 8 times more different scenes of control that are totally configurable by the user including the ability of controlling any 8 tracks within your set and therefore not limited to the first 8 tracks and any device in each track so not limited to the first device....

In addition the reset values are exposed and so can be easily changed or indeed recorded!

Re: [UPDATE 8] APC40 Control Surface - DJ Edition (Beatrepeat+)

Post by S4racen » Sat Feb 27, 2010 12:08 pm

Update 8:

This update is mainly bugfixing with the ability to choose which of five devices on a track the patch controls, i now place my patch as the second device on a track with my dj rack before and after it, that way i can effect signals going into the patch and those coming out (especially effective to filter the stutering effects within the patch)

Been working with JuanSOLO on an update to the control surface master 8x8 which will bear fruit soon, this gives dynamic control of the reset values and the ability to store presets within the patch, once this is done i'll integrate the functionality within as at the moment jumping between devices seems to impose values on the devices the patch is letting go of control of.....

Anyways the best bit of the new update is the beatrepeats and gaters on scene 4.... Limited to 5 clipstop buttons as i want to move these to the scene launch buttons when somebody anybody can help me to disable the scene launch buttons permanently.....

The gater functions off of the Stop All Clips button and is synced to the last chosen beatrepeat, sounds wicked to me but you make up your own mind....

Been asked if i can make the patch functional again for people who don't have an APC40 so i'll try and get that done if enough people want to give the patch a go.....

Update 9:

Added back the functionality that you'll now be able to use the patch with any controller (however the APC40 works using control surface mapping so no need for hard mapping anything)

In addition been working with JuanSOLO on the racks within it and using live.remotes now you don't get any stutteryness when turning the knobs.....

Image

The best way i use this is to have a dj rack before it (comprising of Tarektih effects including the bottom row of knobs being a dj eq with the twister filter, a phaser, fade2redux and a gain forming the top row) which is then greyed out and controlled by the patch when loaded, this will effect the audion into the patch and then if the same rack is dropped onto every one of the other 8 tracks you have control with 8 knobs over one parameter across all eight tracks quickly switchable by holding down shift (map to the small round button that sits on the shift button) and pressing whichever button you've got mapped to each of the little buttons to the right of the top line of clip stop buttons.... And having just read that back it's a bit of a mouthful so i'll post a video in a bit....

Beatrepeat looks really nice, just makes me think...Is it possible to run m4l-applications like a normal VST in a popup-window that you can place it on another screen? You got so many options there, it would be nice to place all of that on an extra screen.

Re: [UPDATE 11] Max4Live - DJ Edition (Kills & Send Control)

Post by S4racen » Sun Feb 28, 2010 10:46 pm

Update 11:

This patch includes a number of revisions:

1, the scene launch buttons are now disabled so i've added new functionality in, not least on scene 3 with Bentosan's eq3 patch so you get high, mid and low kills along with filter up and down, press up and without releasing press down and the filter will glide press up and let go and it'll slam back to uneffect the audio.....

2, Beatrepeats now act more like live's native device, still quantized you pick the point in audio to repeat which then by not letting go of the button and pressing another will change the size of the repeat (this functionality is also on scene two's scene launch buttons as well as being on scene 4 on the stop clip buttons as it seems to complement nicely the looping functions which can only go down to one beat in size)

3, On Scene two (shifted) you can now turn off the follow action functionality as well as choosing it's behaviour when active, choose between play again or play below at the end of a clip (the next clip is triggered 1 beat before the end of the current clip so will work down as low as 1 beat launch quantization

4, The rack on the right now is intelligent to only allow control of devices placed after the patch so as to avoid any crossover of control eg. trying to control the patch itself (bad loop!). Scen Five allows you to choose which device is active but beware that currently values from the current in focus devcie are often carried across into the new device so avoid doing this while audio is playing...

5, The power of Hoffman2k's patch is now included within scene 5, select the send control and you'll launch a floating window that allows you to midi map the 8 knobs displayed and then define clips that when launched change the focus of the 8 knobs, if you choose a clip and select a corresponding send the clip will be launched on the first press of the send controls that are on this scene stop clip buttons, this way i have mapped the Track Control section, Send A of my APC40 so that as i send audio to a send i also have instant control of the device in that send. It take a fair few minutes to get set up but once you've done it once save it within your set and your good to go....

Things to do include some browser stuff that i'd like to implement and it would be nice that when holding the metronome button down i have some functionality of the cliup launch grid on the APC40 for doing stuff like mousecontrol....

The scene launch buttons as well don't currently do their standard function so i need to get into how the redbox works to get that going again (tips please!)

I also have a lot of the Activator and Record Arm buttons unfunctioning at the moment so will look to complete them shortly including a quick focus on clip button.....

Feedback as ever is greatly appreciated, a slave version will appear in the next day or so but if you can't wait simply open a new view of the rack on the left and delete all the live.remotes you find within it....

Cheers

Ive been using the BeatLookUp a lot lately. There are a couple things that really make it over the top, especially the FX 1-2 sends that you can assign to key presses. I didn't figure that feature out at first but once I did it bacame more amazing.

Not sure if you've even use that part. It works like this:
First you have to wire the S1 and S2 in Reaktor to go seperate audio outs in Reaktors mixer.
In Ableton you have to route a track that will individually recieve these from the BeatLookUp
Then you can select a button for either send 1, send 2, or both, for each effect on the BeatLookUp.

For me I have these going to a Delay and a Reverb. So when the sends are active on the LookUp when pressing stutter it can go to the delay but for the Jump 1 it might reverb etc. Really nice for like a oneShot snare hit that reverbs or delays with the beat Jumps.

Something like this might be a way to make use of the leftover Mute/Arm buttons. HOWEVER, maybe hardcoding leftover Mute/Arms to beatJump in different ways i.e, positions, rate. That way you could just mash on them and super glitch it up without using the cue knob.

It's pretty tough to beat Tarakith's ReDux Fade for transitions. But for the faders maybe something like a "Resonance" fade, Or "Reonance/CombFilt" fade. I watched Exiles FingerSet up video again. He has some wicked FX set up on faders. Some real grainy reverb freakyness.

Just a personal opinion though, I almost always want access to my Volume faders at any given moment when mixing. Disabling that on a particular scene might not be worth it. Although I have another idea too! Sometimes I still configure my set so I can send audio to effect but have the ability to turn down the unaffected sound and just leave the effected sound coming out. This makes for killer washed out reverbs and such. Another great technic for fading transitions. Maybe the faders could do that too. Something like turning one down on a particular scene would kill the audio's volume but make sure it was sending just an all wet signal to something like a reverb. If it was sending to like Abletons beatRepeat/Reverb you'd have a killer fading transition.

Hi John,

YEah i like that idea, i already have the stabs of sends in the shifted bank of one of the scenes but i made the decision on the way to work today to move the Activate track, cue/solo and rec/arm to be available only when the metronome is pressed, this way i have 3 controls per scene that don't require you to have combinations of key press's...... This way i can then go whole hog on the three buttons to do anything i want in each scene, given i also now have the 5 scene launch buttons available this makes for some pretty exciting different...

And yeah the way i see it is that when you switch the volume fader to control say fade to redux and effect the wet dry of it as you pull the fader to zero the wet dry goes to all wet.....

One thing I did to most of my Ableton effects like the ReDuxFade is add a "clean" chain that cross fades from 0-5 so when the knob is all the way down nothing is getting processed. I did this for some other effects too. Not sure how much difference it makes, but anyway to save a CPU percent here and there makes me feel a bit better.

I sent BentoSan a request for the EQ3. This will open up a knob for me on my staple FX rack, which closely resembles yours. Although I have the Knob on the twister filter doing what it does, I also have one underneath it that will cross fade a chain that has an Ableton Autofilter set to quantized random square wave. Give's me the ability to switch between the basic filter and a real KingTubby style filter with a simple knob twist.

I had forgotten you have a lot of this stuff set up so it only works when the mentronome is pressed. PERFECT, although I would really like it if that "metronome (shift)" could be assigned to a seperate controller or something else on the APC40. I use all 8 buttons on the device control section to "view" and select stuff in a 4x4 fashion. I miss not having the metronome for that. For me it just keeps things organized visually. I stripped down my DJ set to 4 tracks instead of what used to be 8.

I need to try out your update. I think I'll wait till you get the Slave finished though.

I believe that you can map the live button to left (but within) the shift button to an external midi controller, you'd then need to delete the disabling (p disabler) and observing on the metronome button which i believe if you type r ---shift into an object and then command click you'll find where the shift functionality listens for the metronome button....

I'll be putting bentoSan's eq3 into the patch so it can be controlled by an external midi controller and have a pop out window so you can adjust the curves to suit..... It's the best eq ever imho and the kills sound wicked (already plumbed them in to the latest version...)

Should have something online later though, probably with the slave as well....

When you say you use the 8 buttons to view and select stuff what do you mean specifically? I've got the grid launch buttons free when metronome is pressed so thinking of uses for those, already going to use the four arrows as arrow keys, and was going to have some of the clip launch buttons for choosing the behaviour of volume fader....

Love the sound of the kingtubby affair, could you do me a favour and send me the rack across to the email, always on the hunt, you know me!!

Cheers

With the Device Buttons I have got into the habbit of making them act like the scene select for the old Control Master 8x8, However I use Bomes and Key Emulation to view that particular device instead of the CM8x8. But sometimes I use them just to select a device via blue hand style.

Currently my simplest easiest to mange is:
Top row of Device Buttons 1-4 select my FX unit which has the filter, EQ, and a delay and reverb mapped to the 8 macros (which I will email to you)
The bottom row of 4, are like the scene resets for those.

So basically the top row selects the device, and the button underneath resets it.

This my seem super simple, but for me simplicity has become a must. I have been running Video using VDMX and some external Live feed cameras while performing. I have to keep my set smaller and easy to navigate. I have been trying to incorperate Jitter, but VDMX seems to already do everything I would spend months trying to learn to do with Jitter. And VDMX probably works better. or looks better.

I will be playing a show with my Band on the 5th and will most definitely post a video on Vimeo of some highlights and maybe an explanation of my set up. I am notorious for changing my set up or reconfiguring how I do things. It's like I am on the hunt for the perfect performance rig, but I can never be satisfied or settle on one, at least not for the band stuff. My DJ rig has been modeled after much of the way you have been setting things up, only much more stripped down. After the new MacBooks come out, if I get one this will open up the ability to increase my sets CPU load as well as move all VJ stuff to my current Laptop, and have the new Laptop automate video on the old one. I eneded up buying the Vortex Reaktor ensamble from twisted tools, and I would like to use it live, but currently Reaktor plugs hog to much CPU for live use. I really hope new Macs resolve this. I could feel good about using the SpaceMasterDeluxe again too!

File updated now ready for download.....

Agree with you on the simplicity, i'm sure i'll keep moving things around until the flow is just right for me, as the patch is now massive i imagine it's quite offputting for anyone to reverse engineer so i'm more than happy to point out or help with people who want to make their own revisions (ill probably end up adapting the ideas myself)

Just wish i could get a different behaviour out of the patr's so i could save the values in the patch and not have to worry that each time i click to edit it i'll lose the stored values....
