Right?

In a live performance context, live drums definitely adds something that is very difficult to bring with just programmed beats. It is pretty fucking anticlimactic to watch Venetian Snares dj his "live set". That goes for most live electronic acts that involve staring the screen and twisting knobs and pushing some buttons for effect tweaks or clip launching, as many of you're already aware of. I guess the missing ingredient is the "live" feel that the audience can connect to right away by watching the action being performed. I think it's the same reason that watching people like Edison who does MPC-style live drumming on the monome is more fun to watch because "what you see is what you hear."

I have seen some breakcore acts with live drums and it does make a difference. There's no way Venetian Snares would start incorporating live drums at shows though, but at least Renoise is getting more live performance oriented features like the pattern matrix and unofficial Launchpad support.

Totally agree on all points. I remember when I first started listening to Venetian Snares I thought "jesus how the hell does this guy do all of this on a drumset?" Then later I learned he wasn't; it was all Renoise and whatever he uses. I was kind of disappointed really; his stuff is great but I've seen a few live videos on youtube, and they are pretty much all the same performance wise. The tracks also sounded exactly like they did on the album, like he was just playing back a cd instead of performing it live. One thing to consider, though, is that the guy in the op video probably rehearsed that song for weeks; it is probably insanely hard to just improvise a breakcore set on stage with precise timing at high tempos and stuff like that.

My dream setup is an electronic drum kit with something like the new Roland SPD 30 for triggering samples and fx and shit, and it's nice to know that breakcore is possible with a drum kit. I'm still kind of a newbie to breakcore though; got a list of artists that play live drums?

I've seen Mochipet with a live drummer a few times. Laptop setup, live drums played insanely fast and randomly improvised like free jazz on meth, plus at least one more person doing stuff like live noisescapes through guitar pedals. It usually gets the crowd riled up enough into a punk rawk mosh pit chaos.

On the less-breakcore side, I like Duracell and his nerdy kit setup that triggers his Nord G2 patches. 8bit meets Lighting Bolt style drums.

I've never really understood the desire to give live electronic performance that 'real' look on stage. I like electronically programmed music and don't see the need to pretend it's anything else. That guy was absolutely amazing but, he would only be able to replicate about 10% of the beats at a live show. Also like most electronic acts that incorporate live drummers you probably wouldn't be able to hear him over the programmed beats.

Personally when I go to see a live electronic performance it's to dance my ass off to a well thought out set not to stare at the performer. I'd much rather see the time spent developing more interesting visuals for the audience using projection, lighting and immersive environments.

It seems like there's this inherent need to make anything that's live like a rock show (btw I do like rock music as well :D ), when we should be looking at different methods of presenting a different art form!

Just my little old opinion

Salty P, I agree mostly with what you said as well, which I guess goes to show that live electronic performance can go in many different directions. I think what you say is more true for dj-centric parties where the atmosphere, visuals, and dancing all make up the experience, especially for typical dj sets (or even live hardware sets) where there's not much to look at. But there are more and more "live" electronic performances happening that puts more emphasis in showmanship, musicianship, and audience appreciation of "live" performance. The energy of rock shows can carry over even though the entire performance may consist of laptops, midi controllers, hardware drum machines/samplers, circuit bent toyes...etc but it's still seems easier to pull it off if you have some of the elements from rock, like drums, guitars, or even a mic, perhaps because of audience conditioning.

So I don't think it's an either or situation like rock vs. electronic. Constant innovations in music technology is helping to merge/blur the lines between "traditional" electronic music performance experience and "live" musicianship. And I don't see the point in pegging "different art forms" into distinct categories as if they should never be mixed. I guess genres may help sell records but it can also make for some static, homogeneous art form where everyone is aping one another within the acceptable boundaries of what makes up a certain style.
