dynamic synced gate effect?
dynamic synced gate effect?
Hello fellow Live users,
I'd like to create a gate effect for an audio track that I can control via my USB controller knob. I want to be able to turn the knob and have the gate effect go from being completely off to full on with the gated notes synced to Live's clock. And the gate increments should be locked to 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 etc. Any tips on achieving this effect in Live would be greatly appreciated. And if there's a plug-in that already does this please let me know.
Thanks!

Re: dynamic synced gate effect?
I don't know if theres any plugs out there for that... there may be. But don't spend $ on it. You can build one in Live using a rack.
Re: dynamic synced gate effect?
Interesting. If you have live 7 or 8, where the gate has a sidechain, you could create a separate midi track with an instrument to trigger the gate, say a simpler with a kick or something. Put a beat repeat after it with repeat time mapped to the control (I think this can be set so it will only sync to 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 etc) and mute this channel.
I'm not very good with beta repeat, but I think this should work.

<< and yes, you'll be using the gate effects sidechain input, tho u won't need beat repeat (necessarily)
Re: dynamic synced gate effect?
Well, maybe not, but beat repeat seems like the simplest way to be able to control the rate of sync with a knob. I should have mentioned that doing it this way would probably work best with a one bar phrase, with one note at the start. Could be also be interesting using a delay instead. I might give that a go myself.

Re: dynamic synced gate effect?
Just finished creating this in M4L.... You can press a button to select the gate size and then twist a knob to move it from this position or just twist the knob, effect is on with one push and off when button is released....

Sounds like something you could do with auto-pan too...my brain is too small to tell you how tho

That's what I was thinkin' too....muthafunka wrote:Sounds like something you could do with auto-pan too...my brain is too small to tell you how tho
[ Edit : not the bit about yr brain...
Re: dynamic synced gate effect?
Ok, make a rack with how ever many different gate sizes you want corresponding to how many autopans you have.....
Allocate a different part of the chain to each autopan and midi map the chain selector...
For each autopan set the phase to 0% the amount to 100% and the shape to 100% (i like the sine wave best)
Then a button to on/off of the rack and lo and behold press it and twist the knob and you'll have synced gating in the divisions you want....
It would be easier if autopan had a no triplets buttons like beatrepeat!
Cheers

i use camelspace for that....i luuuuv it!
besides the 128 step gate sequencer also a great multieffects that i use on almost every track.
http://www.camelaudio.com/camelspace.php
not to expensive....i bought it in the groupbuy for 24 euro.

Autopan : Set rate to Sync, phase to 0, shape to 100%, offset to 270 (for sine wave), adjust amount to taste. Map Sync Rate to a knob.
Re: dynamic synced gate effect?
Thanks for all the tips. It looks like I have a few different techniques to try out...
Can't wait to get home tonight and give 'em a shot.
