Cool Edit Pro could do this ten years ago; why can't Ableton by now?

asio4all is not an option. i agree it would be nice to be able to use multiple interfaces for those of us who have them. i, for one, have an rme multiface but have really wanted to complement it with a focusrite liquid saffire 56 because the features of that interface are just flat out awesome... especially for the price. maybe they don't have the best converters in there, but as a recent thread has proven, you can't always tell the difference.

the one issue i see with this not being easily done is the latency difference between the two interfaces you may be using. some companies allow you to use multiple interfaces because their interfaces will run off of just one driver. the rme hammerfall hdsp systems are an example of that. but i'm guessing you are wanting to run different brands of interfaces like my example from above???

Indeed yes - multiple audio interfaces would be greatly appreciated - more and more hardware comes with USB-connections: ROland Sh-201, Gaia, Waldorf Blofeld ...
And being able to have these as audio ins in Live would be great.
I am quickly running out of Live mixable ins and is left with the option of using an external hardware mixer (without automated control of for instance track volumes in live).
