The Black Crowes

Post by beats me » Tue Feb 16, 2010 5:31 am

I have a long consistent history of not really liking bands or artists while they are at their peak and then think they're awesome like 10+ years after the fact, possibly related to giving them enough time to amass a greatest hits. The Black Crowes is one of those bands.

Remedy just kicks it.

For best listening results blast it in your car and do some serious steering wheel drumming and at about 3:45 switch to some knee keyboarding.

Sidebar: Somebody really needs to come out with a steering wheel with APC40 style pads embedded in the wheel and hooked up to a drum sampler that's sub mixed with your stereo.

I really don't know what their typical fan is because the only other time I've heard them other than on the radio is at dive bars or played by cover bands and those people are a virtual grab bag of diversity.

That's why I think I rediscovered them. I've been kind of electronica'd out lately and I've found I can actually just enjoy some good rock music without analyzing it to death, unlike electronica.

"Southern Harmony" is a beautiful album. "Amorica", their followup is equally awesome. Easily my favorite Crowes albums.

My wife caught that show in Belgium. Still talks about it fondly.

I've seen the Crowes twice. First time was at First Avenue in Minneapolis (of Purple Rain fame). Chris Robinson said they were going to do a Prince medley and some dumb motherfuckers in crowd started booing. Chris looked a little taken back, like "WTF" and they didn't do the medley. Whether or not he was joking I will never know, but I'm still a little heartbroken at the thought of potentially missing a Black Crowes Prince Medley... However, it was still a great show and the background singers blew everyone away that night. Second time was with Jimmy Page doing Zeppelin songs. Amazing.

Remedy is a great tune. I remember driving a semi stolen car from south Texas (aka Northern Mexico) to San Antonio with 2 friends when we were 16. That song was on the radio and getting the usual every hour rotation on the stations that were coming in and out as we went. It was a Dodge Lancer and didn't have a cassette deck   so we were forced to listen to the radio.... That song has always reminded me of that trip and those friends... one of whom died of a heroin over dose some years later... :( R.I.P. Chris.

an old band of mine got to open for the black crowes right after their first record came out,
shake your money maker, 1990 i think.... they were like a sleaze rock band at the time, not into the hippie look yet,
although we did trade shrooms for hash with them....
their road manager was pissed about that.
southern harmony is definitely an amazing record...

As somebody pointed out in the comments on that youtube video it's funny how the drummer didn't conform to the attire or style of the rest of the band. I wonder how much background squabbling resulted from that.
