How solid is Live8 for you?

Thanks for the replies. I might run a similar poll in a couple of releases time, to see if the stats improve. Can't see any other way of assessing whether or not Live8 has been 'stabilized'.

I have to say that the new betas (1.2 b4 and b5) are pretty stable. There seems to be a bug with 1.2b5 that doesn't allow you to MIDI-learn by clicking on a button or dial of a VST as it instructs you to do, but I have to report that yet.

I'm optimistic for the future! If this keeps up, Live 8.1.2 could be the Windows 7 (read: hero) of Live!

live8 is unreliable. It's astoundingly bad, and these guys don't care anymore.

I'm furious. Nobody cares, but I'm insane with anger. I can't believe people are comfortable using this in front of large audiences.

Go back to a version that worked for you, obviously you have all the licenses..

Live 8 has been hit or miss for me. I wouldn't say it's been unstable, but I do keep running into little issues here and there that would really make be less than confident in a live situation using it. Seems like each release (beta or point) fixes one issue I have (say, APC things) but introduces another. The biggest issues I have now are:

- Intermittent clicks with triggering new clips using Complex Pro. Happens randomly, and never when I start recording to try and send an example to support

- Slowness. Maybe this is due to the beta logging happening in the background, seen that before, but quite often actions in Live seem to take way to long to perform based on my computer speed and the (lack of) complexity of the project. Things like reordering tracks, saving, deleting clips or tracks, moving devices all have a long pause. Really slows down your workflow.

- Adjusting tempo with an APC40 knob causes clicks in the audio. This is my biggest issue, as my Downtempo DJ Sets rely on this constantly.

I have every confidence that Ableton will sort all these out, but I have to admit I'm one of those who switched back to Logic until things get better. Not that Logic is totally problem free either, but at least i know the issues I'm going to run into with that and they are far less frequent. Still using Live for my performance based work, so I'll know when things get better too.

I am with you - Live 8 when it works sounds so great, but that is ONLY when it works. Right now I can't even get it running. It hangs my computer which then requires a reboot right when it is starting a new live set. The computer is vers fast and powerful and this POS hangs it. I can't even get into Live 8 (8.1.1) to see anything. I have no issues with any software and in fact I still have an OLD version of Sonar 2 - which whils it doesn't have as good or many sounds of Ableton, but at least it works and is stable.

Ableton Live 8.1.1 is trash, pure trash - expensive trash at that!

I contacted support last night about some issues I was having. They wrote me back this morning. I'm working with support to (hopefully) fix the one main issue I'm having with 1.1.2 b5 and my MIDISport. Honestly, everything else seems to be working pretty well at this point, so fingers crossed.

I think they're going to come out of this better than Toyota will. And with programs like ReNoise coming out, it's in their best interest to do so. And like Toyota, this seems to be the first really major (legitimate) bitch session the users have had.

At least none of us are dying. Except maybe on stage

Still, this doesn't discount my irritation, or make me feel any better or less embarrassed due to how our live set turned out the other day. And moving back to version 7 makes the 400 bucks I threw into my APC40 feel a little unfortunate too...

My outrage and irritation is very justified. I have given SO MUCH MONEY to Ableton, and that's not even counting the people that I've convinced to jump on the Ableton bandwagon. This software was not ready to release, and it shouldn't have been.

And, yes, I'll move back to version 7, and eat the upgrade cost, and while I'm at it, I'll eat the cost of my APC40. I think I'm entitled to be a little pissed off.

Version 8 is my first go around with Live. Overall I am pretty happy with the jump. I was using Pro Tools 7.4 for a couple years. For what I use Live for, two guys looping and improvising, Live is a dream come true. I was unaware of what capabilities it had compared to Pro Tools Logic etc. and I don't want to go back and forth between software. I want to use one application for everything and work with it. I am not knocking other DAW's. What I am saying is that what I can now do with Live just can't compare to what I could do with Pro Tools. I haven't been doing this that long compared to allot of other people so I am still a newbie. But I am learning. Composing is just allot easier for me with Live so I am going to stick with it. Crosses fingers for sysex.

Now that the honeymoon is over here is my personal experience with Live 8. I stopped upgrading at 8.09 until I see the complaints go down on the forums a little. I have had some problems with my system but nothing like what I have read on the forums here. The only major crash I have had was with some Demo plugs from IK Multimedia. I had a problem specifically with the Philharmonik VST. I don't know if it was Live or the plug. So I am not bashing either. I was using 3 instances just fine of Philharmonik and on the 4th it crashed hard. To fix it I had to take the VST out of the folder and delete the instances from the project and then I could open it again. If I only use one instance or two I never have a problem so go figure.

I have had a couple of the "can't save due to not enough memory" errors. I just quit Live and it picked back up were it left off. I did not loose any work. It seems to not happen unless I am using a bunch of loopers. In my template there are 6 instances of looper. Annoying but not a deal breaker for me. I am using a Digi Rack 003 as my interface so I don't know if this causes extra problems or not. I have only been using Live for about 8 months or so and I fully plan on making it my only DAW. It is just easier to work with even with some problems. Prot Tools sure as hell wasn't perfect either. It had it's fair share of errors and crashes as well. But not enough for me to really kill my work and I have so far never lost work on either platform. I am willing to accept some problems as all software has them. Ableton seems to be making a genuine effort to fix this version up. At least they are working on it. I don't have a ton of plugs. I have Live Suite and a couple demo plugs from NI and IK multimedia and 1 or 2 freebies, legitimate, from user recommendations.

I have noticed that switching from Pro Tools to live the connection to the 003R will say it's already connected but will not connect. I think this has to do with Automap for some reason. I say this because if I quit Pro Tools, then quit Automap I don't have a problem. So I know the work around. Since all projects are now in Live I really don't worry about it anymore. It was just noticed while I was transferring projects from PT's to Live.

Overall I am pretty happy with my decision to switch. I am not a pro making money with this software. I wish I was so take the review with a grain of salt. But I do feel I am not just lightly using the software with a couple tracks. With two guys looping and improvising from multiple MIDI controllers in real time adding VST instruments on the fly editing on the fly and re-arranging on the fly with a low latency setting it has been pretty good for me. I am sticking with Live.

Hey, nothing is perfect. Sometimes problems will make you more creative.

I have to say, I am really relieved just to hear that some of you are having some major difficulties with Live 8. Only because it at least lets me know that it is not just some weird bugs that occur just within my setup. But it's not good for me either.... it crashes several times every session.

I've tried beta 5 but it crashed once too so I didn't persevere - if I'm going to get crashes anyway then I'd like to at least have the option of opening sets without expiry
