Live 8.1.1 "serious" crash - with NO RECOVERY?

Post by soundsliketree » Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:56 pm

Recently I've been getting a new crash dialog that says a "serious" problem has occurred. When relaunching, I'm prompted if I want to restore but when I do, I've lost a lot of work - it's not the most recent state. Has anybody else been encountering this?

Thanks.

Yes! Every half hour, and hours of work just seem to dissappear. I have encountered this problem a couple times after dragging a group of audio tracks from left to right (therefore changing internal routing of audio (and sidechaining etc..) It allways crashes when I do this. Also the latest recovery is an old one, lossing me hours of work....:-(

This is a serious issue - and the only time in all my years with live (been in the game since version 1) that I have been livid with this software. Does anyone know if this problem (anything which cause a non-recoverable crash) has been reported elsewhere on the forum? Is Ableton aware of it? I'll write them if not.

been getting this all of a sudden after months of rock solid performance, now with 8.1.1 it crashes with no apparent pattern, then says major error upon restart and loses the restore file

i've upgraded to the new beta and no crashes so far today

I'd be curious to know if your crashes stop, maxgraham. Please do post here if you crash with the new beta.
Thanks much.

I experience this issue, when I change the soundcard (reproducable).
If I switch from my ESI UGM96 to the t.bone Micplug USB, everything's fine. If I then switch back to UGM96, Live crashes. On the next startup it asks, if it should recover my work, I click on "Yes", then it tells me, there's a serious problem and Live has to be terminated.
On the next startup, everything is fine again, it asks me to recover, but the recovered Session is a really old one...not the last state.

Really annoying! Also because Live didn't crash that often in the past...

It happens everyday to me...
The most of the times it has to do when draging stuff(mouse click release). Even when draging a live's eq,compressor etc sometimes crashes live...
I am somewhat frustrated...

yes! the crashes were very frequent with me while i was leopard.
I decided to upgrade to snow leopard by doing a clean install, and live happens to run "better" but it still has its issues. I am not saying the reformatting will help your situation 100%, i am just chiming in here. I am so frustrated at this great program :(

I'm on Windows and have lost work now twice in the last two days. 8.1.1 crashes, without explanation, and then auto-recovery causes a serious program error so I have to throw it away.

This IS NOT GOOD! I have NEVER lost work in Live before - it's horrifying. What is going on?

Amazed that it's gone this long and we still don't have an emergency patch for the problem; this is awful.

Hi guys,

Very sorry to hear that the recovery doesn't work! We know it feels horrible
when you just lost hours of work.

But maybe it isn't lost! Please have a look in your Preferences folder.
Whenever Live restores the document from the previous crash, it copies that
document and the undo history to a sub-folder called "Crash". There, each "pair"
appears als "Crash XXXXXXX.als" and "Crash XXXXXXX.cfg", where the Xs encode
the time at which Live copied them (note that the ".als" file is not present
if you started your work from an empty new Live Set, nor is it needed to
restore your work).

So if you've lost work because of this, please send us those "Crash" file
pairs, we'll try to fix them for you. There's no guarantee, but it's worth
a try.

[email protected]

Again, we're very sorry for the inconvenience and frustration this causes.

Carl

Just sent you some of these files...
But what about recorded clips in arrangeview? Usually I record while tweaking for about an hour...is all this information really included in these .cfg files ?
Thanks for the effort and good luck :-S

Hi Doppio,

I would suggest you leave the sample files where they
are - they are most probably fine (you can always check with
another sample editor, just be sure not to overwrite them).
What we can maybe fix is the structure of your document.
This should not affect referenced samples, so it's important
that Live finds those sample files again.

Regards,

Carl

Thanks again,
I hope you understand that the recovery is not my main goal here, just want a smooth ableton workflow.

Andreas
