Shit isn't it? But do you really want to kill somebody?
Although come to think of it, the person who invented the dongle deserves a slow and painful death.

Re: copy protection makes me want to murder somebody
That's one of the major annoyances of software. With hardware you (generally) don't run into these sorts of situations, though of course there are other caveats. But I love the fact that with hw you own it and can use it whenever and how you please. I hate this "you don't own, you are renting" software paradigm bs. Still, I mainly use software due to the convenience and other considerations. So thus far I have only given my money to companies whose licensing schemes are palatable to me. A shout out to U-He, Vember Audio and SonicCharge here. Ableton is the exception. I put up with the personally dreaded activation limit stuff due to the elegance and uniqueness of the software. And it's better than a hardware dongle (Cubase).
Maybe you should setup that Virus after all?

..annoying... but it's only a vst man...chill..
but I hear what you're saying ..
software should be easily accessed by the (few) people who buy it.
it's not like their 'really' protecting their software...there's cracks all around!
I recently had a new OS installed on both computers.. it was really a bitch to authorize all those stuff..
each company with it's own protection schemes.. passwords.. authentication...service center..
copy paste mf!!!
I'd write an angry mail to waldorfHQ..
just so they acknowledge and change their ways in the future..
I have also a beef with Waldorf..
I can't use the installer for Waldorf AttackLE on windows7x64...
and their not planning on updating it as far as I know...
I'm not really using it (or payed for it) but it kinda sucks !

Re: copy protection makes me want to murder somebody
I would much rather have 1 dongle with all my authorization.. instead of registering each friggin product one by one..
on 2 machines !!!
tedious...and it doesn't make any sense.
imho.. a client needs to authorize only once..
when he buys the product.
or when you lose/break the dongle...nothing to do with installation.

Re: copy protection makes me want to murder somebody
well you've heard it all before, but "only a vst" or not, it's the principle of the thing that really gets my goat.
but I put up with it when the software is worth it. Guess I'm part of the problem!! case in point being the insanely labryinthine dongle code download scheme after installing either of the KORG legacy collections. pure, utter bullshit. BUT I couldn't live without those emulations, ack!!
also sometimes my Arturia synths cause errors when I try to instantiate them, the e-liscenser thinks my activation code is gone. Sooo lame because it always crashes Live, too.
Anyway, FOLLOWUP, finally got the thing running, the service center was 'on' again about 8 hours later. guess it needs servicing, ha.

I like Camel Audio's license key file. That add-on pack installer adds it for me, I never have to see or mess with it.
I'm against an iLok dongle simply because I use a laptop and it'd get in the way while on my... lap
Though if I had a 15 or 17" Macbook I wouldn't care as much, those would cover my lap well enough so there'd be no pressure on the USB port. I suppose I could use a 6-12" extension cable... If I had a desktop I'd simply leave it plugged in.

I don't 'produce.' I write music.

Re: copy protection makes me want to murder somebody
Ive actually bought plugins and then had to go download the warez version because the copy protection was pissing me off
Re: copy protection makes me want to murder somebody
+1
I've recently got an iLok & an e-licenser dongle. everything went smooth on the install, but live is hanging more frequently when changing sets.
still though, these things can go way worse than an authorisation delay.

Agreed. And all too often they do. I repeatedly have days where Live tells me that various e-liscenser authorizations "are not found" for Arturia or Rob Papen synths I have purchased. I have to quit, re-start, hope it doesn't happen again. Usually it starts working again after a reboot. One time last week, I couldn't access anything (which meant also not loading the songs with those plugs in ableton, because it crashed ableton every time) for two days.
As I said originally. You pay for it, you get punished for it. Fail.

Re: copy protection makes me want to murder somebody
Precisely what I had in mind, and that lasts until the issue is sorted. As you may know it can easily take longer than two days, and involve a fresh OS install and all the major PITA BS that goes with that. From my experience, PACE don't give a shit when something goes wrong - they point at the plugin developer. And guess who the plugin devs blame ? Why fuckin make your paying customers endure an out-sourced protection scheme you take no responsibility for ?mholloway wrote:(which meant also not loading the songs with those plugs in ableton, because it crashed ableton every time)

the syncrosoft website doesn't exactly fill me with confidence either with regard where the buck stops when & if shit goes fatally wrong.
Nowadays I backup like a motherfucker. But I can still imagine despite my best efforts I'm possibly going to get well and truly fucked by a dongle catastrophe in the future.
I'm gonna look into insuring the dongles and their protected software now that I'm snared. And maybe see what the deal is with insuring my studio machine for the software that's stored on it, out of curiosity if nothing else. I forget which developer recommended insuring dongles for their software, but the idea was they're not handing out another auth so insure the dongle because you'll need to buy a new full-price license if shit goes wrong with it.
Talk about marrying the worst attributes of hardware & software.

Things should definitely work but this is just "computer music", you have to jump through hoops some times. Contact them and get it running. It's a killer soft synth. Would definitely piss me off too, but it happens.
Edit: And don't download cracks. Look around, people need jobs.
