Buy 8 now or wait for 9?
Re: Buy 8 now or wait for 9?
Im betting on a late fall 2010 release.
I cant see it coming out within the next 6 months,
nor can I see there being a two year gap between the release of 8 and 9.

Since 9 is not even beta testing right now, there is no clear date when 9 will be out.
8.1.1 fixed a lot of 8's instabilities. I think right now is a good time to buy.

Re: Buy 8 now or wait for 9?
As one of the individuals experiencing major issues on snow leopard, tiger, vista and win 7 I highly recommend that interested parties try the demo version first. While some of my problems may be unique in that I am using m4l, I still get crashes for some very unusual, standard workflow reasons.jlgrimes wrote:Since 9 is not even beta testing right now, there is no clear date when 9 will be out.

have a look in the bug forum.. which relates to the latest beta..which is allready better than 8.1.1
some claim that live 8 runs stable on most computers.. but any poll in that direction gives a pretty straight 50/50 result..
Ableton never released any comment on which sytems are compatibel with L8 and which are not..
Maybe because thats fluctuating with each update..
So when you buy now you have a good 50% chance to run trouble free.. and a good 50% to get really pissed off..
Thats the reality.. In case the price of L8 is dropped because of the issues i might agree thats a good time to buy..otherwise i rather would say thats a good time to look for alternatives.

I have a hunch that your hunch is totally wrong
They have suspended all development on L9 until all bugs are fixed in L8,

I would estimate that Live 9 will turn up somewhere closer to Winter NAMM 2011 (that's January 2011)
This estimate is based on nothing at all, so don't take that as an educated guess or anything. It's just a guess.

Re: Buy 8 now or wait for 9?
sorry not sure about the quote thing....QUOTE "Just don't think it would ever work out, having something sold at a cheaper price then later charging more would most likely upset people, because of updates for the product you bought for a cheaper price, and get updates and now live is stable per say, and then they decide to up the price saying "oh its stable now buy our product" when you could've got it for a cheaper price in the beginning and just waited for updates??? Its like somethings you buy, say video games, sometimes they might be buggy, but they don't release new versions with fixes, and after that sell them for a higher price stating that its stable now pay more...see... wouldn't that piss you off?."
I do agree that I can see why this would piss the folks off who are just thinking about getting, but does it not piss you off that that you pay how ever much money for a product that messes up for a year. So the lesson learned is that you don't upgrade or buy new ableton releases for at least a year. That has made a great deal of folks unhappy. I jst have never experienced these amount of problems with other daw and a grab them as they are released. Then I see a release admitting a year later about the problems....SOUND LIKE A TOYOTA MOVE TO ME

Finally someone who will preach the truth....Listen to this man cause he has a clue 50% let's just say it again 50% and serato is going to fall victim to this same (recent) horrible reputation. ABleton is going to have to do more than just say I am sorry

I've not seen that poll, do you have a link?
Re: Buy 8 now or wait for 9?
Thanks for all the advice guys, my hunch was just estimating their typical schedule for releasing updates. Looks like 9 is further away than I previously thought.
Also, I knew that 8 had problems but I didn't know it was that prevalent. I should've taken notice at NAMM when Live crashed at least once for every presentation they showcased. It was actually funny cause when it crashed, they'd say, "the good thing about live is that it saves all your work, unlike Pro-Tools" LOL
I will tell you right now though, I LOVE 7 (latest), it works flawlessly on my Macbook Pro Leopard (not snow leopard and laptop is the last one before unibody).

really?
ok..i might have been wrong with the 50% trouble free than.. because they probably would have choosen a trouble free setup on such an important event...
fuckin hell thats bad... what a shame for the poor guys that had to do the demonstration.
but ok.. good repay for the arrogance they have shown in the summer 2009.. hope the guys that showed the arrogant behaviour had to do the demonstrations.

Re: Buy 8 now or wait for 9?
As others have said, check the demo out. If it's stable during the duration of your use, you're probably good to go. Imo, Live 9 won't be out at least until the end of the year. I really have little to base this on, but if they're focusing on bugs I don't see a lot of features being done for some time. I might be convinced to buy M4L as an interim thing, but there's a good chance I won't, despite my love for experimentally things.
I don't 'produce.' I write music.

M4l= infinity*feature requests. Just so you know.

Re: Buy 8 now or wait for 9?
Every DAW has had bad releases. AFAIK Ableton is the only company to acknowledge these problems. Steinberg, Apple and MOTU (Digital Performer) would NEVER make such an announcement and trust me, they have all had very flawed and nasty versions of their software which caused a lot of people problems for a long time.
Examples - Cubase SX2 and Cubase 4 were very nasty on first release and for a period of time after. Logic Pro 7 was very nasty for a time. Digital Performer 6 has been lauded as a disaster (better on DP7). A lot of people persistently whining and being critical would have had their accounts deleted by these forums.
People who do things such as early adopt new technologies especially should expect problems. People who are on Win 7 64 bit and Snow Leopard especially should know that these actions are likely to increase the risk of malfunctioning software.
Yes, Ableton have an obligation to get things right if they want to retain business. No, it's not enough to make the 'Quality' statement and then not back up those words with action. However, remember that Live has many issues to deal with, and being cross platform and with 2 new o/s which came after the release of Live 8 to accomodate for, with a small team it's going to be a challenge. I don't think anyone who owns Live 8 is welcoming people enquiring about live 9 and I think the company has the sense not to release Live 9 imminently because of the issues with Live 8, they not only need to be fixed soon, but a period of stability has to be achieved before L9 can hit the market too.

Re: Buy 8 now or wait for 9?
I remember logic 7. I got the academic version, which meant that I wasn't allowed to purchase the bug-fix, aka "Logic 8".
I am frustrated because I need this work for a deadline. Otherwise I would be using max by itself until live 8 is fixed.
