what you're saying sounds logical in a way, but its not true
open Live and check it when you get a chance -do it the way he has it routed
send the audio from the impulse track to the subgroup - leave the audio subgroup set to Ext In -
now turn on the monitoring switch in the subgroup
if he's still not getting sound, the problem is not the Ext In on the subgroup ..
PS: arm recording will automatically monitor the track, so this will work, but its overkill unless you are actually recording something into the clips slots in the subgroup.
