As much as I love funky music with groove my banging on the keyboard and mouse clicking away seems to only produce highly syncopated 4/4 music. Even when my bass lines have some kind of rhythm to them, still not funky.
I've been listening to Pretty Lights all morning and it basically just sounds like he's chopping up a bunch of samples and slapping a phat moog bass over them and it's just instantly funky.
This makes me

+1
or they might just make you feel worse in comparison, who knows....
or maybe these two commandments of the great JB will get ya going:
"it#s very important every body gets down on the ONE"
"think of your instrument as a percussion instrument, think of the entire band as a percussion ensemble"

I think it's the result of too much fucking around with the details that people love on here and not enough time spent jamming away or banging away on an actual instrument. Step sequencers are the enemy here.

True dat! I can't walk past a "Trade Aid" or hippie/ethnic type shop without checking to see if they have any interesting shakers or percussion toys. Keyboards just aren't physical enough. Computers are even worse!

Do you record any of those at all and use them on your tracks? If so, ever raw or always with effects?

All the time. I always record dry but I just love chaining up Beat Repeats and Autofilters to FSU. Hitting stuff gets me into a different zone.

I won't know for sure until later today, but I'm 98% sure the financial gods have finally smiled upon me enough to get that guitar I've been putting off for months and months and IMO it's one of those instruments that there just isn't a good digital substitute for in both sound and playing. The only mystery is if this will lead to more of a funk groove or if I will just return to my metal roots.
