live 4 with an mpc2000xl

Post by mosesdownload » Thu Mar 31, 2005 7:06 am

hello everyone, i am new to live and i'm having troubles trying to sync my mpc with live. my goal is to trigger samples inside the live program from the pads on my mpc.

i am running the mpc through the midi in on a behringer bcf2000. i don't know what settings to use on both the live program and the mpc to make them communicate the way i want them to.

i need some serious help here. i will check this thread constantly so if anyone can give me some help it will be appreciated. i am also on aim all the time so if someone wanted to get a hold of me through that my name is shiftsample.

thanks in advance,
moses

Hey Man

I am not familiar with the bcf2000 which could be part of the problem. All I can say with that is make sure you have the latest drivers and such. I have an mpc and I trigger sounds in Live all the time or I slave the mpc to Live if there is a beat I have done on the mpc.
If you want to trigger samples in Live from the mpc first make sure that that your midi cables are hooked up properly. For your purpose just go midi out of the mpc into the midi in of your device. Make sure everything is being recognized in Live and is checked off in the preferences.
Go to a midi track in Live and load an instrument, record arm the midi track. Next go to the main sequencer screen on the mpc. In the bottom left corner where it says S:DRUM 1:OFF, change that to S:MIDI:1A-Device01. Now if everything is hooked up right you should see the midi meter on the midi track in Live respond as you hit the pads, triggering the instrument/sample.

Hope this helps, best of luck

thanks for the response Kinetic Kid... i'm at work right now so i can't test out your tips.. but as soon as i get home i'm going to try and make this work. on my previous attempts to make live and my mpc sync together i didn't switch the mpc from drum1 to the midi setting. maybe that was my problem? thanks to you i have a better understanding of what i need to do.

i want to go home soo bad now and make some music.. this work day is going to drag on forever

no dice.

no dice..

*i have live's midi prefs as follows:

remote control input= bcf2000
sync input = bcf2000 with midi timecode checked

*my mpc midi settings are:

sync out - MTC

send MMC = on

then on the main mpc screen i have it set to midi: 1a device01

the bcf2000 can control any setting i want in live and when i hit a pad on the mpc the midi in light on the bcf2000 blinks so there is communication between the two machines.. but i can't set the mpc pads to trigger anything in live...are the settings in live wrong? this is making me mad.. i'm spending all my time trying to get my gear to work and i am not producing any music.

anyone know what i am doing wrong?

Sending a note on message to trigger a virtual instrument and setting up a master slave to sync one device to the other are two different things. All you need is a midi interface and
A midi cable. The bcf 2000 may have an interface on it; if this is the case then you connect the midi cable to the midi out on the mpc and to the midi in on the bcf.
Then in live make sure that in the active devices the bcf is checked.
On the midi track of the virtual instrument that you’re trying to trigger set the midi from-
To all inputs or the bcf, then set the monitor to on. You have to make sure that the mpc drum pads midi note number is the same as the midi note number you are trying to trigger. If still you can’t get anything to trigger make sure there is not a setting in the bcf that allows you to use it as a midi interface.
