Help with getting this damn CD finished

Post by luxembourg » Thu Mar 04, 2010 11:40 am

Hello all,

Anyone got any quick ways to solve the following:

Basically, I’ve been working on 7 songs for around a year (slow worker – I know), and they’re all completely finished and ready to be sent off for duplication – all except for one track!

When I went to ‘normalize’ this track to a decent volume, it didn’t do much. I looked into this and it’s because some of the vocals used have very high (loud) noises here and there. If I reduce the volume on the vocals, they fade away and are almost inaudible. I don’t fancy recording the vocals again with a better mic etc, as I want to get this CD finished quickly, so I can move on with other ideas.

I guess I should be using some sort of limiter, compression or EQ on the vocals track? I have added these onto the track, but mustn’t be set up wisely.

Any ideas to get this boxed off quickly would be great.

(Also, sorry if this type of question gets posted a lot on here) 8O

I'd maximise the vocal in the bottom viewing pane and zoom into the peaks, adjust volume with some automation.

That way the quiet bits wont be vanquished by some nasty scathing compresor or limiter.

(I tend to just keep all my tracks below -6db as i write and use volume automation rather than compression etc. to remove any spikes that occur. I export from Live without any normalization n stuff and cheekily use Adobe CS3 Soundbooth at work to normalise, master and convert to MP3)
