Launchpad as drum machine UPDATE v02

Post by slx » Sun Feb 28, 2010 5:14 pm

Hi,

i patched a simple drum machine or something like that for the Launchpad.

You can use 4 sounds with 16 steps. How to set all up is written in the pure data file.

The patch is configured to use the first 4 sounds of the impulse instrument.

You can still use the other modes of the Launchpad like session mode or mixer mode.

Link to patch and a small clip:

hi rosti,

cool that you tried them.

Have you successfully set the things up and pressed the "start" button in the pure data patch?
Alright.
For e.g. the 8/64:
Take as instrument a drum rack kit. make sure there are sounds in the first 8 slots of the default slot position.
switch on your launchpad the mode to "user2".

Now you will see a red light that runs through the whole grid of 64 buttons from top left to right bottom. Than it starts again top left. This is the metronom light.

You also see on the right side the round arrow buttons. The first one on the top is illuminated. This shows you the chosen sound. By pressing any of the other 8 round buttons you can chose one of the other sounds.

Now start to make a pattern (by sure the midi track with the drum rack kit is armed in ableton), just press one of the 64 buttons. The pressed button will light up. You will hear a sound when the metronom light runs over any of the pressed/selected buttons.

Now switch to the next sound by pressing the 2nd round button on the right. You can go back to any of the patterns of the sounds by pressing the corresponding round button.

have fun. hope that helped.

If you like watch a clip on youtube which explains everything from setup to how to use the schlaeger 16/32:

I found a bug in the 16/32 and the 8/64. I put them on the same links (see 2nd post). Please download the patch again!

I'm trying to do that exact same kind of drum sequencer in m4L but have some issues.
So your patch should be very handy.
Thanks.

I tried the 16 step version out last night, but Live just freaked out.. I was able to make new midi clips and draw notes in them, but play didn't work at all. Lights on the LP worked properly though. Im on Live 8 + OSX Leopard.

I have to try the other ones when i get home from work.

Great work mate, looking at your youtube vid, this is exactly what I have been after. Brilliant. I assume this is also compatible with Vista/xp etc?

@rosti
can you explain what happend or what did not work? i am on osx10.5.8.
The only thing i have frequently problems with is that live sometimes only shows on the indicator light on top right side that it recieves midi data, but it never reaches the track. only thing that helps is to restart your computer.

Windows does not have an equivilent to the IAC driver as part of the OS. Many download and use the free midiyoke software that replicates this. It would be great if this could be added.

With the 16x4 version ableton just gets in this "maximum tilttage" mode where nothing really works. It's super slow and the track launch/rec buttons dont have any response.

The 16/32 seem to work, but the BPM counter is not correct. I had to put the bpm to something over 400 to have it approx 120bpm.

Still really fun thing to play around! Thanks for sharing!

System:
OSX 10.5.8, Live 8.1, Pure Data Extended 0.41.4

I think you can run it on windows. Just use Midiyoke instead of IAC. Run the patches with pd-extended. (DL @ http://puredata.info/)

edit: Or can you?
