Hey war losers!

Post by beats me » Fri Mar 05, 2010 6:56 pm

Since the US has never really been decisively crushed in a major war I was wondering how history is approached and taught in those countries that have been. Sure there's been wars we didn't definitively win but we've never been forced to sign a My Bad statement and then melt down a large percentage of our military hardware into license plates and door knobs.

Do the teachings follow the Middle East standard of "losing is the new winning" or is it a little more humble and cautionary tale?

dunno, has the us ever won a war? if i look at the money they lose each war, i guess not.. then again, i follow the "there are no winners in war" part anyways (and i wait now for jokes about worldwargold in switzerland :))

but yeah, i guess you mean that the us never really had a war at home. they only had foreign wars they send their troups to.

I'd probably move to a cabin in bumfuck to watch how things play out on the news from a safe distance, but I'm curious how our citizenry would react to a foreign military overrunning our country like we've done to so many others. It would probably make the Middle East look like Disneyland.

while it would very well be interesting (esp. seeing how your military would organize itself, fully untrained to such situations, and having so much of their troups not at home), i obviously don't wish it to happen.. i'd prefer america to stop the far-war games. having a war in a country is never fun.

i'm always for putting the presidents or kings or what ever of that country together in some cage, and let them do some death match instead.

fwiw, there was that incident around 1812 or so when British and Canadian troops kinda sorta burned down the US capital city, including the White House.

because nobody ever tried to invade the us you never had to sign anything.. but when a third world country can throw you superpower out that most certainly qualifies as winning.. and where one side wins the other side is the looser
The US loost the vietnam war.. what is fair enough
That is at least what we learn in school.. but we also have evolution in biology.. and geography

1975 Vietnam, definitely major war, not just crushed but humiliated.

but not on their homeland. it would be quite different if f.e. new york would be completely destroyed by say, russians, or china. with millions of civilian people without home, or dead, or in need of help.

so while they got crushed and humiliated, it's completely different to having that happening with the own country. no american knows how that feels. i got a glimpse of it when some moved with their children out of a war into the place i grew up. it's strange to see those children grow. after years, they act completely normal. till some helicopter flyes above the buildings. they still get scared like if it was just yesterday. even while they know, we don't have military helicopters attacking us.

yes. but there's a difference between "we lost the war, lets get outa here and back home to our nice country", and "we lost the war, our country is lost, we have no home, no life, nothing anymore".
