What fun do you have with LP and APC40 without m4l?

Post by #1thelark » Wed Mar 03, 2010 8:23 pm

I got the LP and APC40 here and want to find out which one suits me best...
I don't have m4l so I guess I cannot try the Novation StepSeq etc...

I had a look at the monome emu for apc40 and I got it working, but I don't seem to get the idea how the mlr stuff works with the max runtime and the apc within live. Seems to be very painful to set it all up.

But there also seem to be complex templates for live that don't use Max or M4L at all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apoAmFO7sO4

So please tell me: What are your favourite stepsequencers and fx setups for the LP and/or the APC40 that don't use M4L? Or are they all no good and m4l the only way to work with Live? Which fx/stepseqs are easy to get going?

Cheers

Maybe I need to put it that way: what fun do you guys have with the LP and/or APC40 without m4l?

Share your joy with me...

It depends on what you want to do with any tool at your disposal.

I haven't got M4L or bomes and find the default functions of the APC40 suit me very well. You can create your own step sequencer using follow actions and stuff but I've never delved into that because I don't need to.

Just having a clip matrix is awesome and the device controls are great. The fact that I can customise everything on it anyway is awesome too!

So in answer to your question - yes I'm having lots of fun without the paying extra!

I've been having a blast with follow actions. It's nice because you can have part of your APC40 working like a step sequencer and the rest of it just doing the regular thing.

I toyed around a lot with the sound effects too and I'm starting to get a functional layout for the way I have my sound effects mapped out. I've been using the track selection buttons as an on/off for effects I have on my master channel, and then you can use the device selector(? i think) buttons to switch back and forth between the effects and tweak all the knobs. i just havent figured out what to use the top bank of knobs for yet.

*bump*

Thanks for the contributions so far... please tell me more!
(I need to decide if I want to keep my LP by monday, so I'm looking for the most fun and effective tools/tricks for it that don't require m4l.)

Its up to you man! LP and APC40 are great fun in their own right. I just know that having all the device controls are important for me and my set up!

Hope this helps!

Looks good. Performance seems to be nice. Too bad I'm on Win7.

I tried the pd patch from slx... works nice as well but has still some flaws.

How does that stepsequencer with follow-actions work? How do you light up the pads and play the sound at the same time?

Any more useful efx or stepsequencers that don't use m4l?

read up about follow actions in the help menu. it's pretty straight forward and only takes about 10-15 min to get going for the first time. keep in mind it will be vertical instead of horizontal, but other than that it still has the same functionality.

once you learn how to set the actions, just put the same clip in your channel but going down 8 rows (only can do 5 on the APC40 unless you want to scroll) and then just change the start and stop points on the clip so they each play a fraction of it. once you set your follow actions it will sound like the regular loop is playing, but you can jump around the different parts of it.

i set my quantizations to 1/16, you can use 1/8 or 1/4 as well but don't leave it on global otherwise it will stop before each clip plays.

So you're talking about that mnome mlr/molar kind of sequencing?

similar. it won't take up the whole controller surface, it will only use as many pads as the number of pieces that u cut your clip into.

if you want i'll record a short video to show you what im talking about.

The only problem with it is that the next playing clip outputs a velocity of 126, wich means orange (?) display, and two pads on. But a very simple max patch can avoid this behaviour.

You're talking about how it's confusing because there is always 2 clips lit up instead of 1 like on a real monome?

The one that's playing is lit up and the next one up is blinking right? sort of confusing but as far as I can tell it's not that bad, you just need to pay attention to which one is completely lit and which one is blinking..

Shoot, where have y'all been hiding the BLIP2000?
Nice, it is just waiting to go 'touch' on the IPad.
