# of Simplers in Drum Rack on CPU?
How much CPU drain is caused by the number of Simplers in a Drum Rack? Say you have a favorite kit with maybe 4 kicks, and end up using only 2 in the song- Do you get rid of the unused samples or just leave them?
Re: # of Simplers in Drum Rack on CPU?
it depends on how many are playing at once... what's your processor speed...how much RAM you have..etc..
why don't you try it for yourself?

2.6 GHz 4 GB RAM. Tried it out and it does have a marginal impact.3dot... wrote:it depends on how many are playing at once... what's your processor speed...how much RAM you have..etc..

yep...that's the wonderful thing about racks..anybody human wrote:2.6 GHz 4 GB RAM. Tried it out and it does have a marginal impact.3dot... wrote:it depends on how many are playing at once... what's your processor speed...how much RAM you have..etc..

in my new live set I have a rack containing 21 instances of absynth..
I don't use more than 2 at a time .. and the CPU preserved..
I use simpler more than sampler ...
it's simple(r) and almost unnoticeable cpu wise..

21 instances of Absynth? How did you set that up? I have it and have debated on whether to start using it on some music. I also have the NI Komplete 5 setup and Kontakt is nice to have multiple instruments on different MIDI channels so that I can work on progressions for the clips in MIDI as I work on something. CPU usage wasn't too bad with Kontakt 3 + 3 instruments, actually quite negligible but it wasn't super heavy stuff either.3dot... wrote:yep...that's the wonderful thing about racks..anybody human wrote:2.6 GHz 4 GB RAM. ...each in it's own chain..
'chain selector' fades between one instance to the next..

IF i have like 32 different Live instrument racks loaded into a rack, and select them with a chain selector are ALL of the instruments sucking up CPU while they just sit there? or is only the currently selected chain sucking up CPU..3dot... wrote:...each in it's own chain..

Right now I have chain '0' empty, and I put the selector there when I'm not using these racks, just want to know if they are sucking up CPU if the devices are all on, but sitting there doing nothing..

Re: # of Simplers in Drum Rack on CPU?
as far as I understand most of lives native devices use no cpu if they aren't being used. There are some exceptions for things like beatrepeat which is always buffering. I don't know how 3rd party devices act on different chains, I'm sure someone could give more insight. I'm guessing that they exist in ram but don't eat cpu cycles? :shrug and scratches head:

Re: # of Simplers in Drum Rack on CPU?
I once took a long arp recording and sliced it to MIDI. It ammounted to 5 Drum Racks each with almost 128 simplers in them to load each sample
My 2.4GHz CPU still played it. Mostly. It was a little hitchy, with only one other Instrument Rack with a Konkrete kit loaded and playing, and I still had Alchemy on another track. Buffer was set to 256 or 512, I forget. I might have gotten it under control again by going to 1024 or something. My intent was to manually move all the MIDI notes around, and it glitched it up something nice. As a whole the system did better than I expected.
I wound up bouncing back to audio to kill off all those Simplers. Live took entirely too long to open and close that Set.

Seems like you could easily kill all but maybe 8 of those slices and then recreate virtually the same thing. That is unless there was a huge variance between all the notes.KrisM wrote:I once took a long arp recording and sliced it to MIDI. Re: # of Simplers in Drum Rack on CPU?
Each note was all pretty different in length, and each drum rack was part of a new chord.
In hindsight I might have been able to do just that, but this way was just easier for to do than looking at each slice individually. I forget which method of slice I used, I think it was something from the CovertOps Slice of Winter pack. the notes were pretty f'ed up once I began shifting the MIDI around.

each instance DOES introduce some load... very slightoutershpongolia wrote:IF i have like 32 different Live instrument racks loaded into a rack, and select them with a chain selector are ALL of the instruments sucking up CPU while they just sit there? or is only the currently selected chain sucking up CPU..3dot... wrote:...each in it's own chain..

most synth plugs don't tax that much if their not playing..
I did a test,,,
new empty set...1% cpu
drag in the absynth rack containing 22 instances..
2% cpu... (!!!)
(33%cpu with the 22 GUI editors open..)
audio buffer at 128 samples... 44100Khz
intel Q9550 2.83Ghz 8GB Ram windows7x64
