Studio Headphone

Hi,
I am searching for a good (monitor)studioheadphone, it seems to me AKG got some good stuff, but i tested yesterday AKG 172hd and it sounds not that good, so maybe i find out here witch one you are using or what is reccomeded.

Akg 702. U need a good headphone amp too and burn them both in for 200 hours before they sound right.

Well this may or not be useful to you, or anyone else reading this, but I found a thread on Gearslutz once which was comparing some ludicrously cheap AKG K81 DJ headphones with some ridiculously expensive ones. They had some graphs of frequency responses and so on, and the AKGs compared well with the £1000 ones. I bought the AKGs the next day for £39 less £15 for signing up to their credit card, so £24.

They sound different to my pc speakers, which isnt suprising, and I just got a new setup with KRK Rokits so am still getting used to it, but for the price they are definitely brilliant headphones.

good question. whatever it takes really. something I can save up for or just go get today. too often I play with Live until late at night with headphones only to find I'm dying to hear what the mix sounds like on the Adams.

I'm in the market right now for some GOOD head monitors (using senny's hd215 atm ) been following a thread over on kvr http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=280165 the OP has similar requirements to mine.. and probably the OP here too.

Since you used to Sony, perhaps 7509 or 7506 depending on budget. Otherwise you cant go wrong with AKG 701/702 or Sennheiser 600/650/800 I find Sennhs more comfortable but everyones skull is different. Another advantage of Sony- they work well for tracking while with AKG and Sennhs you will need another set. 7509 are in my opinion the best deal since they are like 3 in one (and that is unbiased since I dont own/use them)

I just recently purchased a pair of Shure SRH840, couldn't be happier with them.

A little pricey maybe but the sound quality is awesome.

I've had the AKG k701s for 3 years. They are pretty amazing. Very comfy, lightweight and a very clean, balanced sound. I have actually mastered in them a lot, of course with monitor checks, but they are pretty flat in terms of response. Like any monitors or headphones, it takes time to get used to them to know their sound in terms of mixing and mastering, bu they are pretty accurate.

I don't use a headphone amp with them, they are quieter than some headphones using the headphone out on my board, but to be honest they are loud enough, and while I have sometimes wonated more volume, I didn't really need it, and they have saved the health of my ears as a result.

Plus 1 on the wearing them in, the bass response gets better over time if you buy them new, a quick route to wearing them in is to leave them on everytime you're out of the house, on a moderate volume for hours.

Given they are fully open backed, they do leak a lot of sound, so they aren't useful for recording, and might annoy the hell out of anyone you live with if they are sitting in close proximity of you listening to the same track over and over while producing it....

I just got a pair of Sony MDR 7506's which are quite nice. They seem to be a bit of "standard" in lots of studios.

After using 7506's and then MDRV700DJ's for year, I finally needed a new pair recently too. Had three sets of MDRV700's that I've used since they came out, but finally had my main pair (the other's are beat from years of DJing) crack like everyone else's. I knew they weren't the most accurate, but the hyped low's and hi's were nice when I wanted it super loud . I tended to not overcommensate like I had with the 7506's.

Anyway, decided this time I was going to get a nice pair of headphones for the studio, so set about checking out all I coudl under $400. Basically settled on the Beyer dt770's, since I've never been a fan of open-back designs. But, I don't know, I just couldn't get into the way I wanted to. Everything just sounded TOO clean for me. Weird.

Ended up going back to DJ style phones, this time with the Sein HD251-II's. Still waiting for those to arrive, but I loved how they sounded when I tested them.

Headphone time for me means I usually want it fun sounding, versus accurate, so the DJ style ones just seem to it that bill better for me.

I really like my Beyer Dynamic DT880 very comfortable. I wouldn't use them for monitoring while tracking next to a mic as they are open back; but they sound great
