camera buffs?

I was looking at a Powershot G10
for portable Power and tweaking options.

Only the price tag is quite close to a DSLR,
much more power and Options? Albeit much bigger, too...

Any thoughts / experoences?

i would just get an eos rebel. it'll take the eos lenses, so you can get a nice one and then someday upgrade the body, if you want

I am planning to ditch my GL1 and D50 for a single Canon DSLR for video and stills, simply amazing stuff and no more juggling lenses for multiple cameras.

It really depends on where you plan to go with things and how much gear you want to lug around. The G10 (the G11 is out now) is an amazing compact camera (that can produce a quality video as well) with a few lenses/flash options to extend its abilities and can produce a professional picture.

The new DSLRs like the 5D mkII and the 7D are pretty sweet. I want to get one of these things eventually to shoot HD video, but I'm going to sit it out for a while. Need to buy too much audio gear first.

It really depends on how much gear you want to lug around.

is probably what it boils down to with this purchase, yeah.
because my wife has an older Pentax DSLR,
and while not the best it is still much better than the Panasonic compact crap I have now.

but can you guess which camera is taking more pics?

The new Canons are the only ones with 1080 HD.

moody is faster and more knowledgable

the nikon D5000 and D90 give you 1.280 x 720.

But the German forums on photography I sifted thru suggest Canon is having a bad phase at the moment and Nikon FTW.
Maybe they are right.

The cameras I saw/held in the store today, the big Nikons seemed much more sturdy/better at first glance.

Even though for compacts I'm drawn to Canons.

the megapixels are way beyond reality already. you should worry more about quality of lens

get something where the best lens fits the cheapest body

Canon EOS 5D mkII is the daddy!

Look at the video footage people are taking with this on YouTube.

It's gorgeous!

I have even seen this footage in comparison to a pro Sony camcorder
costing twice as much, and the Canon wins easily.

There is another firmware update for the 5D mkII coming mid March
which will make it even better for video recording.

The Canon Rebel T1i shoots 1080p video, but I don't think it has an audio input, and it records sound with a built-in mono mic. But, it's affordable at $749 USD. The 7D is the next step up. It has an audio input, and the image sensor is likely nicer looking. It can shoot in 24p for a film-like look. But it's around $1600. The 5D mkII is really well built for keeping out the elements. It's a true pro camera, and the image sensor is really big, so the picture is beautiful. But yeah... it costs money. $2500. Then there's one called the EOS 1D mk IV. This gets beyond my photo gear comprehension. But that bad boy is $5000.

These prices don't include lenses.

And keep in mind that shooting video with a camera body is awkward, and you really need to trick it out for stabilization.

right Ok, that makes absolute sense.
I'll keep that in mind for a time where I might get a DSLR,
right now though I am a bit afraid I could buy a really sweet camera for loads of money,
and then be too lazy to take it out there....
