Hmmm... Well, I had Live 6 power, it was by another author but not a terrible tome by any means. The manual is the first place I would start however (I read the PDF at work sometimes) but it can never hurt to have multiple perspectives and I have always enjoyed the power book (MIDI power is fantastic).

General rule with these kind of books... find a local bookstore that carries the book you're looking for. Nothing worse than paying $20-40 for a book that's a fancy replica of the user manual. Look for something that's more tutorial based and actually shows you how to do stuff rather than just say what this is and what that is.

Exactly. I should hit my local Barnes and Nobles and see if they have Live 8 Power there. But lately I've been going through the manual (for once!) when power was out and reading via flashlight (yeah, hardcore! lol) and found some stuff I wasn't sure of and other stuff that had me going - Cool!donnydonny wrote:General rule with these kind of books... find a local bookstore that carries the book you're looking for. So i ordered it online anyways, wanted something to read, might as well have something to do with ableton, got the power book for 8.darkenedsoul wrote:Exactly. I perused through it and a lot looks like what you'd find in the manual. I would prefer to have a copy I can thumb through vs spending the money (being out of work isn't helping). I may go back and revisit some of the sections online at amazon to see if it would be worth picking up down the road.

I find the book to be very helpful. I'm reading the book instead of the manual. It comes with a cd containing livesets to help guide you through some of the lessons. I would just get Live 8 Power though, I mean why not get the updated version?

I ordered it from Borders since I had a coupon which brought it down closer to Amazon's price + shipped to local store. The Live 8 version.

Re: Worth it????Ableton Live 7 Power the Comprehensive Guide
I have Live 8 Power and it is basically a rewrite of the manual. I don't recall seeing a single trick or unique take on anything anywhere in there.
So I would say no, it is def not worth it.

Re: Worth it????Ableton Live 7 Power the Comprehensive Guide
ordered some stuff on thursday and got it yesterday, the 8 power book kinda does look like it could be just the manual rewrite how some are saying, havnt really skimmed it yet tho been reading a music theory book for computers i also picked up. Either way going to read the crap out of them even tho seems all pretty basic. Need advanced books plz.

Re: Worth it????Ableton Live 7 Power the Comprehensive Guide
Hi,
I got the Live 8 Power recently, and after having ordered it and seeing someone mention it seems to be very similar to the manual, I have to agree with them. I could have saved a few bucks as it doesn't seem to cover anything else that the manual doesn't, albeit it maybe an easier to read sense and more verbage and some examples. One thing I am not happy with it (and the Live 8 manual) is NOTHING on the userconfiguration.txt is mentioned in the appendices nor did I find anything doing a quick peruse through it. You would figure they would have had at least a couple of examples of this IN THE MANUAL/BOOK. I know it is discussed and some examples shown in the forum... but to me it should have been in the documentation (unless I missed it) and in the book written for it (especially stating Live 8 Power). But then again, just my opinion. Maybe the Abe's will add it in with Live 9....one of those feature requests.

Re: Worth it????Ableton Live 7 Power the Comprehensive Guide
I own this book and it is very useful for a beginner of Ableton Live 7 like me. It also includes a nice Live with Live section and is commenting often about the m-audio trigger finger (designed by an former author of this book), a midi controller I own, too. Also the lessons are downloadable from their website to get the learning by doing effect. It is fun to read. I purchased it thru ebay for € 5. I would recommend it to newbies with Live 7.

I freq use 4pleasure: Mac10.6, Arkaos GrandVJ, Adobe CS, Live8Suite, FCP, Miniak, Xio+V-Station, Trigger Finger, Nanok, Audio Cubes, Mouthorgan,...

It isn't bad, by no means. I was just a bit disappointed. I'm no guru with Live as I don't use it every day/all the time. I use it when I am in the mood to work on something (which lately hasn't been a whole lot due to other reasons). If there is downloadable content then that's good. I'll take a look inside the front cover to see where this is and check it out.
