Routing inputs from a firewire interface to specific tracks

Post by Jaybone » Fri Apr 01, 2005 7:50 am

Hi. I recently purchased the Edirol FA-101 firewire audio device and was wondering if it's possible to route each channel via firewire in to a specific track in Live. For example if I have my guitar running in to input 1, can I directly input to track 1 only, with let's say the keyboard running through input 2 routed directly to track 2? As it stands right now, the full mix is monitored through live, and when I want to direct the signal to a track I just arm the record button. But if I have multiple intstruments routed in through the unit I can't isolate just 1 from the mix......I checked the manual but am I missing something? As well, is it possible to route the signal from 1 track out through a specific channel output in the FA 101? Any suggestions would be of help.....thanks! MAC ibook G4 1.2ghz, 768RAM

jaybone,

you certainly should be able to route each input (and output) individually from your device.

first, double check your audio preferences (input config and output config) and make sure they're all on.

back in the program, go to mixer view (by hitting tab) and make sure you can see the inputs and outputs (the toggle button for this is the top one in the list of 5 just to the right of the Master Channel's level bars).

Now, for each audio channel, drop down the input and output boxes and you should see all your individual ins and outs listed there. You'll probably select, say, 1 for vocals and 2 for guitar (3 for keyboard, 4 for piano-accordian etc).

And away you go. Let us know how you got on.

Thanks...seems to be working! I'm still hearing the dry sound coming through the mix outside of the assigned track....is there anyway to eliminate that? (So the sound is limited to the assigned track only?) :D

hmm, not 100% sure what you mean there.

are we talking monitoring or playback? if you're talking monitoring (you can hear dry signal coming back as you play or sing), then you've probably got hardware monitoring turned on.

that means, as you feed a signal into your audio device, it gets sent to the comp (as it should be) but ALSO gets spat back out the device's outputs. This alows people (read:me) with lousy latency to monitor their own performance without the annoying delay.

to get rid of that, go to the device's control panel, and look for the tickbox "hardware monitoring" or "realtime monitoring" and un-check it.

That way, you'll only be monitoring the signal that gets passed to live, processed, then sent back out the outputs you've chosen.

Let us know if that's got it sorted. If you're saying you're getting a signal coming back on all the outputs while you're PLAYING BACK, that's a different kettle of fish. But lets cross that bridge when we come to it!

oh sorry mate, on your unit, hardware monitoring ("direct monitoring") is right there on the front panel of your unit. it's a couple of buttons. turn it off.

I also just bloody figured out how to do this last night aswell, we should all just spend more time R'ing TFM if you ask me. For months I've been wanting to isolate tracks whilst recording, but have had to do them individually, and last night the penny dropped, I'm very happy, but now that I know how to do this I want a bigger audio interface, cos now I know how to have more fun! :)
