Need a little advice...

Scroobius Pip & Myself are about to go on tour for the next few months and I'm getting paranoid my tired old Mac might die on me!

If I put a copy of our set (with all the related files) & a copy of the latest version of Ableton Suite onto a DVD, will that be all I need to install Ableton onto another Mac if required? Obviously I'll need an internet connection for Authorisation but I'm not missing anything am I?

You may not even need the internet actually. You can usually open saved projects in an un-registered Live, you just can't save anything you might change during that session.

Another thing to keep in mind are possible read errors. CD's and DVD's aren't the most reliable media carriers out there. If you want to be sure I'd invest in a small external USB HD. You can easily hook it up to your PC and start using it right away.

Ofcourse; a DVD is more likely to survive a drop than such an HD, but still...

For the autorization, just carry around a backup of Unlock.cfg

From a Windows 7 box:

C:\Users\sleepymoose\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live 8.1\Unlock

I keep a backup Live Set + Ableton installer + screengrab pics of my Live preferences on a USB stick and in the data partition of my ipod.

Cheers, been burnt by that one in the past, when I have multiple USB controllers into Live, I don't necessarily want them enabled as MIDI output destinations or I get MIDI feedback-loops and/or squirrley behaviour.

Hey dan!

+1 on all said before.

But if your Mac's harddisk dies during or short before a gig you're fucked. That's why I additionally would create a bootable clone of your internal HD on an external (Firewire 800 -> speed) HD with Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware). Then in case just boot from the external clone & continue within 5 minutes…
Avoid Western Digital enclosures because many of them are not bootable!

STEKO - That is how my back up has been for the last couple of years but as my firewire 400 socket doesn't work, I have to use my firewire 800 for my soundcard, must get that repaired really, or buy a new mac but that's not going to happen until Snow Leopard gets a little more stable!!!

Lets hope it lasts til Munich!
