Always interesting that all an artist needs is a few great tracks or a great album for people to take the time to convince themselves they like any subsequent release for the duration of that artist's career. "It really grew on me after the 12th listen." If it was a new artist they wouldn't make it past the 30 second previews.

But hey, makes more sense than sports fanatics. Some teams won't have a good season for decades and the fan will still claim they are great mostly based on players and coaches that are long gone. Or they'll always support the local team despite nobody on the team or staff being born in that area. Mostly you're just celebrating your team's bank account and who it's able to afford. That makes no sense.

I've supported Leeds United all my life, my dad took me with him on the day we beat Sheff Utd to win the Championship in 1974 but all I remember is the cheering as I was 3 years old. However, for most of my life as a supporter we've been crap, with 14 seasons outside the top flight (11 in the 2nd tier, 3 in the 3rd tier) and maybe half a dozen seasons where we did quite well in 32 years as a committed fan, the best being winning the top flight title in 1992 (I started going seriously as a 7 year old).

Now we are currently in the 3rd tier of British Soccer after having gone bust twice and are probably gonna blow promotion this year, but I still love them, although they frustrate the hell out me. Nothing to love about the bank balance at Elland Road, that's for sure and we are still getting 25,000 fans in spite of being in our 3rd year in the 3rd divison of British football.

It would have been easy to switch teams and do what everyone else does and support Man United or Chelsea (ironically Leed's 2 most hated teams) but there is an element of the tribal in it all, especially given that we went to all the matches home and away for 2 decades. As the last bloke says, you don't sh*t on the colours and anyone with self respect doesn't change his colours. You're allowed to do this up to the age of about 15. After that, you stick with it or be prepared to be called a 'plastic fan' or 'bandwagon jumper' etc for the rest of your life ...

As somebody who doesn't really follow American sports, European football fanatics completely defy explanation to me.

I watched a documentary on two rival European slum gangs. Here in the states gangs fight over turf and control over drugs, prostitution, and gambling. Illegal but at least makes sense on some financial level. These 2 European gangs were beating the shit out of each other simply based on guys kicking a ball around a field. What's the logic in that?
