Syncing Loops in Live 8

Post by Faldoe » Thu Mar 11, 2010 8:59 pm

I'm using Looper in Live 8, its great but I'm having troubling syncing loops - I have 2 audio tracks running, each with looper. I want to be able to sync the 2. The thing is, a lot of times, one loop will be shorter than the other so trying to get them to no drift off is hard.

I've messed around with the "quantize" tab - Global, 1/16th, etc. but that doesn't seem to help, nor does the "follow loop tempo" cause if I tell loop 2 to follow loop 1, loop 2's pitch will drop to meet the same tempo as 1...

Any solutions to this?

Set the loop in one track and then just record clips after that w/ each loop that would have been on looper two on a separate track.

are you starting the loops after Live is already in play mode? Or are you using the Loopers while Live is in stop mode? this will affect that pitch change you are talking about. If Live is already in play (and you're using the metronome or beats as your guide), then you will get no pitch change. If Live is in stop mode, and your loop length is different than the set tempo, then yes, Live will adjust the pitch to match the correct loop length.

I would suggest using the metronome for a while, just so you know your loop lengths will be correct. start playing Live, then set Looper 1 to 'follow song tempo' and quantize to '1 bar'. Set Looper 2 to the same settings. Hit 'record' on Looper 1 within the '1 bar' quantize and hit 'play' on Looper 1 within the '1 bar' to close the loop. Make sure you are hitting record and play within one bar of the 'one/downbeat' of a bar. Is it working now?

Now, while Looper 1 plays, do the same record/play technique on Looper 2, and you should have perfectly sync'd loops.

hope that helps. I have 4 Loopers running, each on an FX Return. Loopers 1, 2 and 3 are all locked to tempo. Looper 4 is free form to do weird off-kilter timed loops.

I'm doing it all live - with my drummer. We're writing right now so I'm also recording us (mic's output muted) while we play..No sure if that messes with it....

I'll try the metronome thing. Also, would setting one of my midi controller's switches (I'm using the Behringer FCB1010) to control tap tempo aid in the process?

We're also dealing with different time sigs in one song, that may make it more difficult..

ahhhh!
there's no way to get tightly sync'd loops with a live drummer, unless that drummer is playing to a click track (metronome).
or...unless your drummer is clearly hearing your 'first loop' and can play to that loop. Once you lock a loop, THAT is the timekeeper, and the drummer MUST follow that (or, the metronome).

If the drummer is going to follow your 'first loop' then set Looper 1 to 'set and follow song tempo', and set the control to 'start song'.
Set quantization to 'none'.

this way, you will start the loop in time with the drummer and it will begin recording immediately. When you close the loop, Live will begin playback, and will set the tempo of the song to your 'first loop' length. Now, your drummer will have to follow that tempo.

On Looper 2, set it to 'follow song tempo', and set the quantization to whatever you feel comfortable with as far as how quick you need to stomp on a button. I personally like '1 bar'. Looper 2 will now be in sync with Looper 1, and shouldn't change pitch because Live is already running at the tempo you set from your first loop.

The reason i suggest feeding the metronome to the drummer, is that he really needs to hear the 'One' of the bar, since that's when Live is going to start (and stop) recording with any quantized setting you have set on the looper. I've had this situation quite a bit lately...trying to find a drummer who can (and wants to) play with locked loops. A lot of times, they have their own phrasing in their heads, so their 'one' may not be what Ableton's 'one' is, and loops can get off kilter very easily.

different time sigs open up a whole other issue, so i'd try and solve the sync issue first, then move onto time signature issues once you are grooving successfully.

tap tempo is handy to have under your feet, but if you change tempo while you have loops running, they will change pitch and go all wonky on you if you change tempo midstream.

my FCB1010 currently looks like this...

bank 1:
pedal 1: record/overdub
pedal 2: play loop
pedal 3: stop
pedal 4: clear loop
pedal 5: start playback of Live
pedal 6: show Looper 1
pedal 7: reverse loop
pedal 8: cut loop in half
pedal 9: double loop length
pedal 10: stop playback of Live

exp1: Looper 1 volume
exp2: Looper 2 volume

bank 2 does the same thing, except all controls control Looper 2, with playback and stop of Live being common.
same thing for bank 3 and bank 4....they control Loopers 3 and 4 respectively, with playback and stop of Live being common.

this way, i can see any looper i want (by going to that bank and hitting 6), and i can start and stop Live by pedals 5 and 10 on any bank.

so far, this is the best looping setup i've ever had. very fun!

good luck with your setup!!!
