Everything
Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.

Re: How do you use Ableton "live"
That's the bee's knees right there. Love that video. It was a big inspiration in my current set up actually.
My setup is something along the same lines, but a little more compact. It revolves around an APC40, NI Maschine, NI Kore and any other triggering device like a keyboard. I Limit myself to 8 tracks. One of which is Maschine so it can do lots of drums on that track. Then I'll have a track for sound effects, hits, ambiances and other one-shots that I trigger manually. One for Bass, one for pads, two for leads and two for other instruments. Many of these tracks will use Kore or racks to layer more than one plug-in instrument. Maschine hardware takes care of Maschine software, APC40 for mixing, and I use the Kore controller primarily for send effect parameters which are is Kore effect device. It's a beauty set up that lets me record and loop on the fly and the composition is essentially the same as the performance.

- to play back sequences / loops
- to play software instruments
- as an improvisation tool (playing / processing / looping)
its funny, i realized i use live as a setlist alot of the time (if im playing drums on most of the songs, and laptop on some).

I have one long set. 5 tracks (DrumRack,Upright Bass,Zebra,Zebra, samples). I use program changes for the Zebra tracks to change patches as I go thru the set. I play with a live drummer and I play keys (TruePianos/VB3/ and Electric) all thru a macbook. I trigger next scene and manipulate samples/sounds with a nanoKontrol. Is that what you mean?

Re: How do you use Ableton "live"
so you have one song setup to your idi controller, how do you switch to the next song? I assume the presets stay the same? I forget which clip trigger mode lets you start and stop the clip, i guess thats what youre using right?

Re: How do you use Ableton live in a live situation?
@glitchrock, dinaiz, jimi_k: Cheers! Glad you found it useful!
@cacti: We have one preset (patch) for each song in the MIDI keyboards. Each patch transmits on a different MIDI channel, and all the clips and instrument/plugin parameters for that song receive on that channel. The exception to this is the Drehbank "mixer" which doesn't have presets and always transmits on MIDI ch1 throughout the whole set. The clips being triggered as parts of Scenes, from the ReMote 25 buttons, are mostly set to "Trigger" launch mode. For the live playing clips under the keys, they are either set to "Gate" or "Toggle" depending on how I want to play them. Also, not shown in this vid, I have Simpler and Sampler instruments for some songs that are played on the keyboards.
There's a 1 hour video here of Tom COSM and us demo'ing our live setups that goes into much greater detail if you're interested.

Re: How do you use Ableton live in a live situation?
On stage we have everything plugged into Live.
I have my guitar, microkorg, theremin and Stylophone in one input and my brother has his Keytar on the other.
I also have a pedal that switches my guitar between Live and my guitar amp
Then we build up the song adding a Guitar loop & bass line etc.. using a $5 foot pedal made out of an old Qwerty keyboard.
and some cut up dvds for pedals.
My brother plays synth lines & solos on his keytar (sometimes with midi sometimes the keytar itself) and I sing vocoder with my microkorg.
I even just managed to set up some spare buttons on my brothers keytar to switch between effects/instruments.
Its working great at the moment.

Hey jimi, as it happens we're playing a free outdoor gig in New Plymouth on Sat 27th. OK technically its Taranaki, not the Manawatu, but....

Re: How do you use Ableton live in a live situation?
Hey thanks for the Vid PB.
Its not too dissimilar to how I am heading in a way. Although from your breif midi description I think it would be routed in a very different way.
Regards to having two machines, what was the reason for that? Had you tried with one and it was not stable?
What is the CPU running at with the workload split in half like that?
