on the very serious side, i understand that ranting about music, for me is nothing i can think of so influencial to my mood and mental and physical well being then music, as much as it can make me happy even under extreme emotional conditions that are caused by something else, as much can it turn me into an aggressive monster, once in london in fabric i freaked out like mad and started a fight while i was forced to listen in the small room to some RnB shit just for a few minutes, while looking for my girlfriend, the agro was purely caused by the music, on the other hand it can also lift me into heaven. (and i don't see that as a problem, actually it is the oposite)

minimal music, the berlin type we are talking about honestly makes me physically sick.

music is powerful. and that is a good thing!

I always thought minimal was like Plastikman ala Consumed, Spastik, Sheet One, etc. All this minimal stuff people talk about nowadays doesn't sound very minimal to me....

some minimal music can be really good if its used in the right way! its got to be progressive! and actually go somewhere instead of just going round and round and round and...... YAWN!!! anyway im new to writing music on abelton but ive been djing for ten years and most of my music at the moment is pretty simple stuff! just wish i could get that sound im looking for!! :?

yep, me too.

but he is everything but boring, there is a hell lot going on in his music. i think it is very simple actually he has something NO ONE can ever learn in music or any other art: he has SOUL and you either got it as a person and it then can possibly translate into what you are doing, or you don't have it and never ever will, no matter how hard you try.

I think what your are talking about is groove or whatever you wanne to call it. A funky bassline(not just in techno or mnml) is not about the notes it is about the pause between theme.

I dunno, its just like any other genre, lots of really crappy music with the occasional good tune. Then a bunch of dudes bitching about whats what.

yeah, i completely agree. i was trying to hint at something like you said by being cheeky ~; )
minimalism in techno has as much to do with variation in the sound as subtle shifts in the arrangement. i'm also tired of the glut of bad minimal techno, which could be almost renamed 'stochastic, slightly varying timbre 16th notes and shepard's tone builds with a bunch of shuffle'.
it's an easy formula to follow, and i know i've been guilty of it (but only play my shite as layers). minimalism is perhaps even more difficult to do well than other aesthetic decisions, comparable to design in that regard.
there's still a lot of good minimal out there, you just have to dig. but then, hasn't that happened with pretty much every dance music genre that's gotten popular? innovators get crowded with immitators, which eventually die out, and the talent keeps making music they put their hearts into.

I think this is the truths.

When I hear good progressive tracks, or whatever genre really, there is always movement, suggestion of movement, build, and resolution. It's the static loop where nothing changes that grates a little I think.

yup, it is like going to the majority of berlin clubs and the DJs that play over here (most of them) you go in at 2am and leave at 11am and you still have the same freakin' loop in your head, nothing changed for hours except your alcohol and drug intake, that is if you did not died of boredom before 11am.

I don't know what the fuck any of you are even talking about. how about naming an artist or track? "minimal" doesn't mean shit to me, sorry.

people who slag off entire genres are almost invariably complete twats who don't actually know anything about music.
