The Big Idea of Life

Post by BoxDJ » Tue Mar 16, 2010 3:57 am

For the past several days I have had a cold. I've been struggling to find the meaning of life. Whatever we do in the world becomes insignificant because we die and we will never know what became of our ideas/creations. And what if there is something after we die? And what if there isn't? In the end we die.

We all think there is only one perspective on everything and its the humans. What if there was a different life form out there? What if there is a 6th sense? This would change the face of the way we think and science itself.

Earth from our perspective may look beautiful but not from another life form's.

Are humans going to be stuck on earth forever? Is the nearest planet that can sustain human life too far?

I feel paranoid.

Drake's equation says there is a high probability of extraterrestrial life, but the Fermi paradox makes you wonder...

Humans will be stuck on this planet forever, because we are intent on driving ourselves and the biosphere extinct before we can learn enough about the biotic cycles to have a hope in terraforming another planet.

An old line of mine but a good one:

"'whats the meaning of life?' is the dumbest question I've ever heard. Its like asking what the meaning of a toaster is. The meaning of a toaster is to toast, the meaning of life is to live."

people say it would be a curse to live for ever however I would just love to see what happens.

I want to know what the human race does next.

robots, brain implants, space travel, pandora. I want to see it all.

I also thought, "As for men, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?"

So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?

I'd say that the answer to your question depends entirely on your worldview. Do you have a materialist worldview? Humanist? Buddhist? Christian? Muslim?

I don't think something like finding aliens or a 6th sense would change much in terms of giving life meaning. According to Drake's equation it is still very unlikely we will ever find another civilization, but even if we did it wouldn't be much different than finding there was another tribe just over the mountain. Of course it would answer a lot of questions and would be incredibly exciting for a really long time, but eventually it's the same as finding another tribe over the mountain. Finding a 6th sense....do any of your other 5 senses satisfy your craving for meaning? How does leaving Earth help....so we can ponder the meaning of life on other planets?
