Live + Elektron MonoMachine - Tell Me How YOU Do it

Post by contakt321 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 11:42 pm

Hey there,

I know there are some folks on here using Elektron gear (Tarekith, I have def listened to your stuff) and I am really, really, tempted to buy a MonoMachine

I was wondering, what's your workflow?

Do you:
1. Do you do everything on the Monomachine, then record the audio in Live?
2. Do you sync via Midi and use both at the same time? If so, is it tight? Which do you slave?

Do I want a MonoMachine? It looks amazing, but not sure how I will incorporate. One thing I worry about the most is that I work slow, it often takes a few sessions to finish a tune, and generally, I do a lot of automation after I have the song arranged (this is usually my last step before mixing). I am wondering how having a hardware device would factor into that.

automation is just the same with hardware.. except you need to do it via midiclips.

I sold it! :D Pulled my hair of and got rid of it within a year. I love the surgical filter and some of the SID type oscillators. Together, it has a unique sound.

I would want a dedicated midi controller to run it. The knobs made me crazy. Either they jump in huge steps, or they are very slow. Theres no normal 1, 2, 3, 4 to 127 stepping. Instead you either have to turn the knob 360 degrees a few times, or you can turn it 90 degrees and it will move in stair steps of 7, or something like that. :?

I read the full manual multiple times on vacation, bringing the Mono along. Its a very complex and irregular operation to do simple stuff like recording automation, internally.
I don't remember right now the limitations of using a midi controller to run it, but there was a few limitations there too. Not all the parameters were able to be midi controlled. And the brilliant joystick neither. In the end it was just to much hassle for my type of use. However, a lot of people are happy with its limitations. Its a great studio synth, if your not going to tweak everything live! I do progressive music, and use all the parameters all the time. It had to go.

that is what I do, the mono sequences everything (all hardware), then I record multitrack audio

btw my last album is almost all sequenced by a monomachine

I have the MD, not the MnM or Octatrack (hehehe), but I tend to do as much as I can on the MD and then record a stereo audio feed. The Elektrons don't seem to lend themselves well to automation from DAWs. At least, doing so usually takes away from the Elektron sequencer, and that's what makes Elektron gear so cool in the first place. IMVHO.

Yes it defeats the purpose of having an MD or MM if you try to control them externally.
It's best to use them like WaveRider(can use it to sequence software as well), then they become a complete instrument.
Then you realise why they are that expensive.

Thanks for the input guys!

Kind of surprised there isn't more info on the web, and more geekery on this board about them, but I guess they are a boutique company.
