Production Advice Needed!

Post by snafsnaf » Wed Mar 17, 2010 8:09 pm

Hi all,

Basicaly i'm making a techno / house track. It sounds great, with a melodic sample rising up an octave every 8 bars.

But now i want to make the melodic sample sound as if it is slowly rising and rising higher and higher.
How do i do this please?

For example Total Departure by Cirez D sounds fairly similar. If you know this track you will understand what i mean!

Hope to hear from someone,
Chris

Sorry i need to elaborate on the 2nd bit...

I want the melodic sample to rise slowly by the beat, not by every 8 bars. So it sounds like it is seemlesly rising up and up.

Hopefuly this paints a clearer picture for you :)

If I understand what you are saying, you would like your tune to rise in pitch, progressively, as if going up a hill or something, instead of suddenly ging up one full octave at the end of 8 bars? One option is to automate the pitch of the particular 8 bar section (assuming it is midi data not audio) in the clip view. Jut double click on the clip to open the detail view of it, and then there will be three little options at the far left of this menu which, when clicked on, will open up different aspects of the clip data. One of those is automation, which will likely place a blue (at least in my color layout) line across your clip in clip view (where it actually shows the midi notes) which is an automation line. If you click on one of those dropdown menues it will provide options for what you can automate, such as volume, panning, etc. and generally you can select pitch as one of your automation choices. So select pitch and then double click on that blue line over the clip view to create automation points. I cant remember if this menu provides a whole octave shift or not, but experiment with where you place the start and end automation points vertically along this view to see how it effects the pitch of your clip. Likely you will have one automation point on the original blue line perfectly even with where it starts, and then one at the end of your clip at the very top of the clip view, making a diagonal line upwards---> / <--- Anyways, play around with this and you should figure it out.

Thats great, thanks!

I have just gone on to the clip, but the only 2 options on the bottom left of the clip are, an 'e', and a small icon that looks like a waveform. So there is'nt 3 options as you say.

Secondly i cant seem to find the automate option anywhere just yet. I am on version 6.
Any clues please????

Cheers

Aha, I was under the impression you were using a midi clip, audio is a different story and i am not sure how to get the desired effect

POp the sample into sampler and automate the transpose over the time period, your are restricted by the 128 though.

i think.

or you could simply do a pitch automation in the sample view and then see which warp mode offers the smoothest results.

Right i can't see an automate option, or pitch.
When i use transpose, it rises in steps. But i want the sound to smoothly elivate.

I have tried to do this in midi now also, but can't figure it out.

Is it even possible to do on live?

No i did'nt think warping would give the sample a rising effect.

Would'nt it just speed or or slow down if i messed with warp?

create a transposition envelope with one point at the beginning of the sample and another at the end of the sample. then delete any points in between. the only warp mode that disables that is repitch but in your case complex or texture should work relatively well. but again, this is just one way to do it and it might not work how you want it. but it could. try it.

Maybe try this, and adjust it to suit your style.

Thats great, thanks guys.

The only thing is, it now sounds like the speed is increasing, not the note.
How do i change this please?????
