output volume lower in live compared to other apps?

i searched for a previous thread on this topic but could not find one.

i am using live for all my work these days and love it but i have noticed for some time now that the output is lower than every other app. does this have something to do with it's audio engine?
i've tried many sound cards and it's the same with every driver. this is on mac os x 10.3.8
compared to peak, logic, etc. the output of live seems like it is a -4 db output. am i just crazy?
try opening peak and live and playing back the same sound file. always lower in live for me.
