how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
with live you cant use any vst's or vsti's..
so what are you people doing when rewiring live to another daw?
the only reason i could see rewiring live to another daw for would be to use the feature's in another daw that
live is lacking in arrange view.
with out proper rewire support this really becomes useless..
i have read some of you mix in another daw..
what is the advantage in that? we know your not doing it because you think it sounds better in another daw... you cant bypass live's audio engine this way..
if you are recording in live and then exporting stems into another daw , the stems were still made in live so your not bypassing anything.
maybe some one has figured out how to use vst's and vsti's in rewire mode?
this seems like a real tedious process if the only advantage (if you want to call it that) is to see the stems moving fader peaks with a mixer that looks different than lives but is still virtual.
the only reason im writing this is because i found it interesting that some of you are also using other daw's, i figured that the advantage to using another daw would be to bypass live's arrange view. but its not really possible unless you are only using lives effects and instruments..

Re: how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
Most of the times I use Live as a slave to Protools which is my main DAW. I do this to quickly run some ideas in the session view and perhaps pull loops in without having to setup warping in PT. Sometimes I just want to use the effects like beat repeat.
Other times I us Live as the master and Rewire Reason as the slave to create beats or other foundations that will ultimately be mixed in Protools. Sometimes I rewire Reason and Live in the same Protools session at the same time.
It really all depends of course but just having all the options and flavors of different processing, effects, and instruments makes it more worthwhile.

If I find I'm using a lot of plugs (read: fx not instruments) and the project is large then I'll use Reaper to mix things. It's the most cpu efficient host I own.nathannn wrote:i have read some of you mix in another daw..

I usually use Live to compose and arrange and then export all audio and do a touch of extra tweaking/editing/mixing in Cubase. Occasionally I dub extra things in Cubase too, if I get new ideas or whatever. Occasionally I use rewire, not having VST support in Live in Rewire slave mode is a minor irritable, but you can easily just set up FX on the rewire input channel in Cubase, or export a MIDI file and open the VST on a MIDI track in Cubase.
Benefits - Cubase has less CPU load than Live, so can run more tracks and plugins, I tend to prefer it's plugins and if I use 3rd party VSTs I don't need an extra VST buffer as in Live, I can lay out the arrangement and mixer screen/screens/extended mixer on 2 screens which really helps one to mix more efficiently, I can do pitch correction with Variaudio for vocals or monophonic instruments, use the Convolution reverb Reverence, use the automation panel and set up automation with bezier curves, use VST Expression on VSTS which support it (very good on orchestral tracks), if a project is really heavy, I can use the offline processing to apply audio processes or plugins with full history to go back at any time or any stage to modify (imagine a multi stage freeze with total recall and editability at any pre-rendered stage). Cubase also supports more control surfaces and synths with it's Device Panels feature and Sysex facilities plus the Logical Editor.
Having said all of this, I tend to keep my electronic music projects in Live (unless the project gets very heavy), my alt/rock project and mixing/mastering work or collabs from other artists I tend to render out and finish in Cubase.

vst support in rewire mode would be so nice, I left cubase for ableton because it was too much overhead with two sequencers. but rewiring ableton WITH vst support to cubase would be my dream
Re: how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
LIVE rewired in DP. I use this in all my projects. I use Session view exclusively.
I Use live as my drum farm. Taking loops, chopping slicing and then record drums into DP. I record / write everything in DP. I'll then bounce Vocals, bass, leads and whole measures of music back into LIVE. Then I chop, slice and dice in LIVE session while my drums play in DP. I create new parts from the chopped pieces and then record them back into DP.
I do all my arrangement, mixing and mixdown in DP.

I have started to bounce/export my tracks from a Live song and do a final edit/mixdown and mastering job in Reaper.UncleAge wrote:If I find I'm using a lot of plugs (read: fx not instruments) and the project is large then I'll use Reaper to mix things. Re: how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
i guess i have never understood why anyone would use another app to host live until last night.
i thought you guys just liked to make things hard or something... then i started really reading up on other daws. mainly cubase and logic.
i stumbled upon a feature that i have been requesting for ages and didnt even think it existed in another daw..
its called BEAT MAPPING within logic.
from what i have read and seen with the video's beat mapping allows you to record a track without a click going and then lets you adjust the click to your track (instead of the other way around).
YES!!!!!!!!!
i have been wanting something like this for so damn long!
i also read about a lot of other features in logic that are not as important to me but they do seem like something i would use often.
i am going to demo logic over the weekend and if it works out i will probably end up using live in the same way chidj explained.
i really like live but it seems like ableton are really taking along time just to add minor feature's and they have never added anything i have suggested.
leedsquieteman said something in another thread along the line's of "you are blissfully ignorant"
i feel sometimes ignorance is bliss (like when it comes to knowing the ins and outs of cockos reaper) but other times ignorance is really repressive. and in the case of me not knowing about this feature in logic i feel like i have been a tyrant repressing myself from something very use full.
so thanks leeds.

is this not possible with the "stretch notes" feature using midi or tap tempo, which inserts a warp marker on an audio track every time you tap?nathannn wrote: i stumbled upon a feature that i have been requesting for ages and didnt even think it existed in another daw..

ehh, I think this feature is in live...just make a track tempo 'master' in arrange (the tempo follows the tracks tempo/warpmakers then)

Re: how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
Nathann - no hard feelings buddy. Honestly, if I had started on Live instead of Cubase from the Atari days, I would probably be blissfully ignorant too and just be using Live. I love Live and if I had to dump one DAW and be restricted to one DAW I would use Live. I just find the way I currently do things fits my workflow better.

I've been following both of you for a while and always walk away with valuable info. If this forum had a rating system, I'd give this thread a thumbs up for a very healthy debate and opinion. Thank you Nate for posing the question and all those that contributed. You guys rock.
Re: how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
for me it is a workflow issue that ultimately ends up in different results, as much as live makes me being more creative and faster in session view, logic makes me mix much better, besides the in my opinion way supperior plugins of logic that makes things sound better. i love live's session view but i can't stand the toy mixer and the shit arrangement, plus not having screen shots is a major meh for mixing, for me.
live is by far the most inviting writting and performing tool (only being challenged by maschine right now), but that's about it, for mixing/producing it is weak, IMO.
well, you see how many people claim it is not as good sounding, which is not true at all, on the other hand it maybe is, because it's structure just simply leads to weaker results coming from the user!
the way a software/hardware 'speaks to you' is having a big influence on results, i discover maschine right now and i can tell you it turns my working behaviour upside down in a good way.

Re: how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
subfunk, what are these big issues for you, I'm really interested. I think that live lacks some "classic" daw features, yes and I really miss them, but even in the arrange view (I work 95% in arrange view) the pros overweight the cons for me (comparing to cubase). I'm just faster even if I have to do workarounds for the lacking features. I'm happy that I don't need a "classic" daw mixer due to the great effect system in live, I just build my own mixer channels.
my biggest complain is in the automation system, no editing from different midi tracks in one editor(http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php? ... t=multible), and the overview (big arrangements are a bit unclear - for example: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=109031)) at the moment.
nevertheless, I have to confess that I sometimes ask myself I should switch back to cubase for producing, but everytime I tried it I missed lives workflow to much (and I know cubase pretty well too)

Re: how are you using live with other daws? i dont get it..
What do you mean exactly? Why i don't like live's arrangement view that much?
Well, it is a lot of things, and i am never happy with any type of workaround as long as i have the choice of using another program, which i own anyways.
the lack of screen shots and zooming (via shortcuts) is absolute major, the amount of shifting the window priorities in live is driving me nuts, and it gets terribly cluttered and is visually a nightmare when you have many tracks and automations open (the total oposite of the neat session view) no folder tracks, no ghosts or aliases, no choice of propper time lines (a la logic) no possibility to have one 'switch' floating window of any plugin (a la logic) no tool box, weak automation editing, no autozoom high lighted track, general lack of shortcuts important for arranger tasks, the list goes on and on...
all a matter of taste, as much as i love live's session view, i dislike the arrangement. you can do a track in live of course, i was more talking about that it influences the way you work and therefor ultimately the result, i said it once, take a BMW 6er or a porsche carrera, both are top class mega fast sport cars, i am sure the porsche makes you drive more agressively, same accounts for the use of software, IMO.
